I thought that ToT were awful today. We scored early again, but couldn't capitalise. After they equalised I thought that we were set for another frustraing evening. And, I wasn't wrong!
We absolutely dominated, but...guess what? Poor finishing let us down. However, justice was done when Kone turned in an Arthit free kick deep into time added on for a TOT defender's blatant time wasting tactics. Sweet
About thirty visiting fans in a disappointing crowd, which may have just been over 3,000 (actually 2,394 - ed). I guess the timing of the match was the reason for such a poor turnout - our lowest for a couple of seasons. Should be a few more there for the SriRacha v Chonburi Derby a week tomorrow.

Match Report
Chonburi lost 0-2 against Bodo Glimt from Norway on Saturday. A decent game but hard to get a real feel for our season, as most of the squad were either out injured (Pipob and Kiatprawut) or on international duty. That said, we did play a very precise passing game and got the ball out wide a lot more than we were doing last year. So I'm quite optimistic ahead of the coming campaign.
The Norwegians brought on a big strapping Brazilian centre forward at half time. He made all the difference. Scored an absolute cracker with virtually his first touch and then gave the defenders a hard time for the rest of the afternoon. I wish we had him!
Most of the Norwegian ex-pat community were in attendance so, for a friendly, there was a good atmosphere.

The Thai Run In

Tuesday, September 29, 2009
With four games to play in the Thai Premier League things couldn't be tighter in an epic title race between newly promoted Muang Thong United and Chonburi.
1 - Muang Thong 26 16 7 3 41-18 55
2 - Chonburi 26 16 6 4 44-26 54
Just one point between them and they go head to head at the Thunderdome this weekend. Defeat will not mean it's game over for Chonburi but with points on the board and home advantage in the run in it would seem that the advantage is with Muang Thong.
But they haven't won yet. Chonburi, who are likely to be cheered on by something like 3-5,000 fans, aren't heading to the smoke to roll over and die for the presumed champions elect. The Sharks have been there and done that and they will be desperate to remind the Thai footballing public that it is they who have the recent pedigree and it is they who still fly the Thai flag in the AFC Cup.
Chonburi are the TPL's leading scorers, an honour they share with 4th placed BEC Tero while Muang Thong United have the meanest defence by far. And who can forget earlier in the season when Chonburi were turned over 5-2 by a rampant United side breathing fire in the eastern seaboard downpour.
Though the game is not until Sunday tickets will be on sale in advance with some people expecting a crowd approaching 20,000. Indeed concerns were so high about the Thunderdome's ability to host such a high profile fixture that there were suggestions the game be moved to Supachalasai Stadium with it's 35,000 capacity.
For more information about this important game from both camps, in English, check out the Muang Thong United blog and this Chonburi website.
It just so happens I will be in Bangkok this weekend so watch out for some great exclusives before and after the game. If I remember to take the lens cap off or press record or it don't rain! Or I decide I can't be bothered and pop along to see my local team instead!

Match Report
A pulsating derby match that, in journalese, had "everything". Chonburi started brightly, passing the ball well and looking to put the two recent setbacks behind them. Even before their fourth minute goal they had a few chances to take the lead, with Ekkaphan and Micheal Byrne (starting for the first time) both going close.
However, it was to be the former who broke the deadlock with a stunning strike into the bottom corner. SriRacha responded well and Nattapong had to clear off the line following a mix up in the defence. But it was the "home" team who were dictating the play. Byrne in particular looking busy and shooting at every opportunity. This policy paid off when he broke his duck midway through the first half to put the Sharks 2-0 up.
At half time the main topic of conversation seemed to revolve around how many goals we would score. Unfortunately, nobody from SriRacha was eavesdropping. The Blue Marlin came out with renewed vigour and were causing us all sorts of problems with their bold attacking approach.
Therefore it came as no real surprise when they pulled one back. However, the manner of the goal had the Chonburi fans fuming. A SriRacha defender seemed to go right through the back of Kone to win the ball. A foul in anybody's book. Amazingly, the referee waved play on. The chorus of boos that greeted the resultant goal could probably be heard in Rayong.
But, it was to get worse. A few minutes later a long hopeful through ball was completely misjudged by Chonlatit. As the advancing attacker nipped in behind and bore down on goal, Kosin charged off his line to meet him. There's no question that it was a penalty but a red card? The forward was definitely going away from goal but he made a meal (including starters, pudding, cheese & crackers and coffee) of the challenge and went down dramatically. Needless, to say, the referee's popularity took an even bigger hit.
After a lengthy delay, Suchin entered the fray - at the expense of Byrne - but could do nothing to stop the perfectly struck spot kick. So, 2-2 with twenty minutes left, Chonburi down to ten men and SriRacha with their tails up, it was going to be all hands to the pump. However, Zico had other ideas. I've been quite critical of him and hs tactics recently but now he was about to play a masterstroke. Deciding to go three at the back and take the game to SriRacha was a gamble that could have backfired and he would have been slaughtered on here.
Thankfully, the move paid off and as we entered stoppage time (5 minutes), Man of the Match, Ekkaphan sealed the points with another fine finish. The home support went crazy.
The remaining time was played out without any further scares and the celebrations that greeted the final whistle were tinged with relief.
An extremely entertaining game with, just about, the right result. I'm pleaed that we are back on top and have shown that we can roll up our sleeves when the odds are seemingly stacked against us. As for SriRacha, they are now in serious trouble at the bottom. I genuinely hope that they can pull themselves clear - starting with a win next week against Muang Thong United.

Match Report
An entertaining but ultimately frustrating afternoon, which saw the league's leading scorers fail to find the net for the second successive game. But it could, and should, have been so different.
In complete contrast to Wednesday's match, Chonburi employed an attacking approach and created a hatful of chances. With the hard working Adul in the middle and full backs Suree and Nattapong marauding down the wings it seemed that the visitors would return to winning ways after their slip up during the week. The desire was certainly there. Unfortunately desire alone is not enough and if you don't score goals you don't win matches - which on days like this seems totally unfair.
The visitors dominated in the first half and enjoyed the bulk of possession. On the rare occasions that TOT threatened they found the Chonburi defence in fine form - one tackle from Suree to deny a home striker a certain goal was quite sublime. Chonlatit and Kiatprawut both looked solid and comfortably dealt with anything that came their way. And for long periods Kosin was reduced to a spectator's role; so much so that I half expected one of the Thunderdome turnstile operators to ask him for B50.
The second half picked up where the first had ended with The Sharks againing enjoying a lot of the ball. Micheal Byrne, obviously fit again, was introduced on the hour mark and was involved straight away with some nice link up play and his no nonsense tackling approach. Indeed such was his enthusiasm that within a minute or so of entering the fray he had to briefly leave the field for treatment to a bloody nose.
As the last ten minutes arrived the realisation finally dawned on the, once again, impressive away following that this wasn't to be our day. However, it threatened to get worse. Maybe sensing the resignation that had set in to the Chonburi players and supporters, TOT pressed forward and were unlucky not to snatch a goal, and all three points, for themselves.
One chance was headed just over from very close range, Suchao was flagged offiside when he was clear on goal with only the keeper to beat (even from the opposite end of the ground I could see that this was the wrong decision) and Madengue hit the post with a shot after a mazey run which left numerous white shirted defenders scattered on the floor.
So, in the end, another point. I would have preferred three and a bagful of goals but having endured the last ten minutes, I'll take it. We're still top. For the time being.

Match Report
A stunning goal by Pipob On-Mo ten minutes into the second half sealed an impressive win for a determined Chonburi team and sparked scenes of wild celebration for Srindhorn's biggest crowd of the season. But it wasn't all plain sailling.
I thought that PEA shaded the first half and were slightly unlucky to be behind at the break. They started the match brightly and had obviously come to win all three points. However, some poor finishing let them down. Chonburi too were guilty of a couple of poor misses; Micheal Byrne headed against the post when it seemed as if he was sure to score from Nattapong's pin point cross and Adul shot tamely wide after he had created space for himself with a neat turn.
We were also struggling with our passing game and a worringly large number of players constantly lost their footing on a slippery surface. The visitors didn't seem to have such problems and stroked the ball around in a manner that belied their lowly position. They also managed to stay upright!
Our first goal, midway through the half, was the result of a quickly taken free kick. And, as the ball was knocked across the box, the impressive Ekaphan was on the spot to fire home. "Cherry" is in a rich vein of form at the moment and I'm sure that this hasn't gone un-noticed among the ranks of the Thai national team hiearchy.
If PEA were the better team in the first half, Chonburi certainly claimed the second forty five minutes for themselves. Right from the restart they looked as if they meant business and it came as no surprise when Micael Byrne added a second on 48 minutes. A delightful through ball from Arthit saw Byrne clear with just the keeper to beat. He steadied himself before coolly slotting home for his third goal in three games.
2-0 up with just over forty minutes to play. We've been in this position numerous times during this campaign and, for some reason, have been unable to cope. However, there was to be no such problem this time. Five minutes after Byrne's goal, Piob contolled the ball on his chest, swivelled, and cracked the ball into the net all in one sweet move. The delight on his face was there for all to see as he wheeled away in celebration.
For a short time after the third goal, Chonburi threatened to run riot. However, PEA's defence held firm and the deluge didn't materialise. This was a huge win for us and puts the pressure back on Muang Thong (who play away against SriRacha on Sunday). I've been very impressed with our steely approach to the last two league games and it's also pleasing to see the goals being spread around a bit more. If everyone can stay fit and free of suspension (we aren't Pattaya Utd, our suspended players actually have to sit out when they're not eligible to play - Kosin and Kone were both unavailable today) then we could go all the way.

Match Report
Fifteen minutes from time I turned to the bloke standing next to me and said, "I'd settle for a point, now." But it could all have been so different. As with last week's match we had played some wonderful stuff in the first half and should have been able to declare. However, some poor finishing meant we went into the break level at 0-0.
Early in the second period we were awarded a free kick in what the Thai press must surely be calling "Arthit Territory". Up stepped the man in the blue boots and fired his shot straight into the wall. But, by a quirk of fate, the ball cannoned off a defender and flew into the net, drawing gasps rather than cheers from the away fans.
It was just the stroke of luck we needed. Unfortunately, it served as more of a spark for the home team to spring into life than to inspire us. The intelligent Mensah was having a field day down the right hand side and was carving open the Chonburi defence at will. Therefore it came as no real surprise when he skipped past a host of static defenders and squeezed the ball home at Kosin's near post.
This was the cue for the visitors to respond. Only we didn't. Osotspa sensed victory and only some poor shooting and reluctance to shoot kept the scores level. With time ticking away and me looking up the name of a good dry cleaners, Kone received the ball on the edge of the home penalty area during a rare attack. He held off a couple of challenges, kept his balance and his nerve and slotted the ball into the bottom corner. Scenes of mass delirium followed, during which a corner flag was broken, causing a slight delay while a substitute was found.
The closing seconds were played out with a reprise of Michael Byrne's party piece - a trip to the corner for a game of keep ball; he's only played about 20 minutes for us so far and ten of these minutes must have been spent within five yards of the corner flag!
When the final whistle sounded, the 1,800+ visiting fans could celebrate. We're still top. Still 3 points clear. And still winning whilst playing below par. I love this club.
As a post script, next week will be our 100th TPL game. Our first ever away game in this division was against Osotspa at Rattanabundit University (an entertaining 3-3 draw, since you ask). I travelled to that match on the team bus with about 10 other fans. We were joined at the stadium by about 20 more. Yesterday we took nearly 2,000. Heady days indeed!

Match report
Traditionally this has been the biggest game of the season for us. However, with Tero's star fading and other clubs overtaking them both on and off the field this was just another fixture. Although for the first time in three years we at least had the pleasure of visiting at the weekend.
The heavy rain that greeted us on our arrval in Nong Jork had made playing conditions very difficult but Chonburi started like a team that had something to prove. The ball was fizzed around quickly and accurately and the huge travelling support were able to forget the soaking they were getting as they settled back to enjoy the game.
At half time the visitors were two goals to the good - two set pieces - but really should have had four or five. Kone being guilty of the biggest miss when he headed wide from six yards out.
The second half was a complete reversal of the first. Tero had obviously had a bit of a talking to during the break and tore into Chonburi from the first whistle. Using the flanks to great effect and getting numbers forward they were causing the visitors defence all sorts of problems; the introduction of Bamba on the right wing had the biggest impact. Kosin made a few good saves (his handling has improved during the past few weeks) and the Tero forwards rattled the, correctly proportioned, woodwork more times than I found comfortable.
Therefore, it came as no surprise when they pulled a goal back. I felt at this time that if they'd scored again they would have been favourites to win. Thankfully some brave defending and good fortune saw us home.
The celebrations at the final whistle were slightly muted as we all knew that we had got away with a fortunate three points. But do I care? Thanks to other results (the announcement of the BKK Glass result on the bus received the loudest cheer of the day) we now have a clear lead at the top. And with Muang Thong also losing and Osotspa dropping a point it was a good day for us.
A few other points of interest. Michael Byrne came on midway through the second half. He showed a few good touches - a lovely through ball to set up Kone was a joy - and put himself about a bit. His experiences on the non League grounds of England was also an advantage as he kept his nerve to run the clock down during the final few nervy minutes.
I feel I do have to comment on the man in the middle. He was awful!! He gave free kicks for non-existent fouls, let pretty bad tackles go and yellow carded players for innocuous challenges. He had a shocker and made no allowances whatsoever for the conditions.
Finally, on to Tero themselves. I've posted on another thread that they'll have to do some serious thinking if they're not to get left behind. Their home support doesn't seem to have grown and their ground falls far short of some of the other stadiums that are currently being used or being built.
On the playing front, there were certainly signs that Tawan can turn things round and lead them to a top four finish. Whether they can still attract the big names remains to be seen.

AFC Cup Chonburi 4-0 PSMS Medan - Match Report: 2009
AFC Cup
Round of 16
Chonburi 4-0 PSMS Medan

Match Report
by the-afc.com
Thailand's Chonburi FC advanced to the quarter-finals of the AFC Cup after Mohamed Kone's hat-trick proved the foundation of a 4-0 victory over PSMS Medan at Rajamangala Stadium. Chonburi took the lead in the 18th minute through Kone and the powerful striker notched his second in the 66th minute to effectively seal the win. Midfielder Ekaphan Inthasen added a third goal in the 85th minute before Kone completed his treble in the third minute of injury time in the last 16 encounter.
The Group G winners showed just why they are currently in top spot in the Thai Premier League, controlling the game through crisp passing and while also proving technically superior. Medan set out their stall to play on the counter and Reswandi Sumaji was unlucky not to open the scoring after 13 minutes when his rising free-kick from 25 yards was tipped over by Chonburi goalkeeper Kosin Hathairattanakool. Kone then broke the deadlock in the 18th minute when he blasted home from close range and the striker almost netted a second three minutes later but PSMS goalkeeper Markus Harison Rihihina did well to keep him at bay.
PSMS almost equalised in the 27th minute when forward Elie Aiboy burst through with just Kosin to beat but the Chonburi shotstopper pushed the close-range shot wide. The Thai side again threatened after the break when Ekaphan powered into space but his ball across the face of the goal was cleared. PSMS were awarded a free-kick just outside the box in the 53nd minute but Leonardo Martins Dinelli saw his drive blocked by Chonburi's defensive wall.
Pipob On-mo then spurned a great opportunity to double Chonburi's lead but headed wide with an open goal at his mercy before Kosin tipped PSMS captain Esteban Tejeras powerful volley around the post in the 64th minute. Two minutes later, Chonburi finally put some daylight between themselves and the Indonesians as Kone squirmed through the PSMS defence and coolly slotted home. The third goal came five minutes from time as Ekaphan cut in from the left channel and found the back of the net and Kone notched his hat trick in the third minute of injury time when he rounded Markus and fired home.
The game was also the last in a Chonburi shirt for Surat Sukha, who is departing for Australian A-League side Melbourne Victory and the midfielder departed in the 89th minute to a rousing reception from the home crowd.
