NEW! Season Previews - 7. Chiang Rai Utd: 2021

Our latest season preview comes courtesy of Chiang Rai Utd fan, Alec Peeples.

What are your expectations for the season ahead?
I think this is a big season for Chiang Rai. We shocked the league by winning the title and since then have failed to establish ourselves in any definitive way. Our pragmatic style of football isn't quite as fun when we aren't challenging for the top of the league and I don't think it necessarily fits the strengths of our current batch of players.

That said, aside from the loss to Suphanburi, we ended last season on a great run of form. We won the FA cup and we had a decent showing in the ACL. I think we have a strong squad despite the lack of reinforcements and I fully expect us to have our sights on another cup trophy and remain in the title conversation.

How do you think the lack of a regular pre season will affect your early performances?
I'm sure there will be some lack of real match fitness but given that other teams will face the same issue I don't think this will have too much of an impact. I've seen a bit of training and scrimmaging and the team looks sharp.

What are your thoughts on the plan for the way the season will start?
I am shocked that we will be starting in September. I was firmly in the 2022 camp. I applaud the FA for getting the plan together and sticking to it. And I’m even more surprised that (it seems) fans will be allowed in some provinces. Couldn’t ask for much more than that.

How long do you think it will be before things can return to "normal"?
If by normal you mean unrestricted travel (for away days) and full stadiums… I think it will be some time still. Perhaps mid to late 2022. The idea of a ‘vaccine passport’ seems to be catching on in Thailand, which means there is the potential for big crowds in the near(ish) future, but the country still lacks mass vaccination, especially in the provinces. So until we see Thailand really step up the vaccine numbers I don’t expect large crowds or many traveling away fans.

What are your thoughts on your team's opening four fixtures?
We have Samut Prakan, Korat, Ratchaburi, and Prachuap - all at home. I think these are all winnable fixtures and from what I understand we'll be allowed a limited crowd. I'm very optimistic about the start of the season!

Once we're allowed back in, which home games are you most looking forward to?
The opening match against Samut Prakan will be great (assuming the rumours of limited fans hold true). I haven’t seen a live match since last season’s FA Cup semi final - in hindsight that wasn’t that long ago but it feels like ages. I’m just excited to get back into Singha Stadium and cheer the team on. And of course there are always the big matches to get excited for - Buriram, Port, etc.

And which away games are you most looking forward to?
Definitely Khon Kaen Utd - I love the city but haven’t visited in a couple years.

How do you plan to follow the matches you're not allowed to attend?
I have my fingers crossed that AIS Play will put out a good product.

What do you make of your new signings?
I think we signed a few squad players. I honestly don't know much about them but I don't expect them to be much more than fringe players.

And what about the players you've let go?
We lost Chaiyawat which I would say is a big loss. He was young and always exciting in attack (and liable for a yellow card in defense). We'll feel the loss - especially with our lack of reinforcements in attack - but I wish him the best at Samut Prakan.

Which players will have the most impact this season?
Phitiwat earned a lot of plaudits for his performance with the NT recently. He was one of the best midfielders in the league last year but flew under most people’s radar. I expect him to have a statement season and really breakthrough into that upper echelon of Thai players.

Ekanit spent much of the past season injured or recovering from injury and was unable to really get a good run of form going. He seems to have turned a corner and I think he will finally return to the form of our championship season when he was hailed as one of the best young Thai talents.

If you could re-sign one of your club's former players, at the peak of his powers, who would it be?
Leandro Assumpção. Admittedly he was before my time following Chiang Rai, but from what I have heard and what I’ve seen in the later stages of his career I think his prime was very high-level and he would add a lot of excitement and ruthlessness to our attack.

If you could give your head coach one piece of advice, what would it be?
I'd like to see the attack more linked up with the midfield. We have pace and creativity in attack, and our midfield is great on the ball. But it feels that there is never a great connection. Beyond that... I wish your hands weren't tied with lineups and substitutions.

What do you think of your club's new kits?
They are bright and unique - that’s what I like in a kit. I’ll always welcome a ‘loud’ design that may miss the mark a bit over a boring rehash of the same shirt year after year. Chiang Rai does merchandise well so we are never spoiled for choice - official shirt, ACL shirt, fan club shirts, there is something for everyone.

What song would you choose for your team's run out music on match days?
Rebel Without A Pause - Public Enemy

Who are your favourites to win the league?
BGPU. Not much to add as I think most fans are in agreement here.

Who else do you think can challenge?
Buriram made some good moves in the offseason, but of course that will depend on how well the pieces fit together. Really when we talk about the “second tier” of teams (i.e. every team that isn’t BGPU), I think just about every club stands an equal chance. Buriram, Port, Chiangrai, so on.

Who is going down?
Suphanburi has floated around at the bottom for too long and I expect they will finally run out of luck. As much as I want to cheer for Khon Kaen Utd I think they will find life in T1 difficult. As for the third, I think there are a few contenders - Chiang Mai, Nongbua, perhaps even Prachuap.

Which team would you most like to beat this season?
Always nice to beat any of the big teams, but I always relish beating Port above all else..

Is there anything else you'd like to add?
Nothing other than I’m excited for the return of football. Been a rough few months for everyone and the distraction is welcome.

New! Season Previews - 6. Muang Thong Utd: 2021

Muang Thong Utd fan, Grant Aitken is here with his new season preview.

What are your expectations for your club in the season ahead?
We have a young side but I’d like to see some indication of progress whilst we continue to focus on youth. Last season we finished on the same points as SPC, but I see them going backwards this season. Similarly, I hope we can leapfrog any side that finished above us that haven’t shown much signs of growth. My expectation is 4thor 5th but we’ll have to cut out the defensive naiveties that cost us dear last season.

How do you think the lack of a regular pre season will affect your early performances?
Muangthong arranged several preseason friendlies that were cancelled due to the uncertainty of whether live action was permitted. Meanwhile teams from the provinces arranged multiple friendlies, and in some cases involving players that should have been in quarantine. The FA deserves credit for persevering with their plan to start the season as close to the scheduled time as possible, but the lack of guidelines around preseason friendlies has led to a disparity in preparations. It’s not the ideal way to start the season. As it stands we will be going into the first match of the season pretty cold.

What are your thoughts on the plan for the way the season will start?
I’m of the opinion that the need to start the season ASAP as further delays would cripple clubs financially. Whatever it takes, just make it happen and do what is necessary to appease the government and any restrictive measures they put in place.

How long do you think it will be before things can return to "normal"?
I’m not expecting a return to normality this season. Perhaps partial attendances will be permitted early 2022. We look at least 6 months behind the West in terms of vaccinations, and I expect that gap to widen if anything.

What are your thoughts on your team's opening four fixtures?
Honestly, I don’t mind who we play and in what order. Largely, because I will be watching the matches on a screen either way, but also as we tend to fair well against top half teams whilst being equally prone to the odd banana skin too.

Once fans are allowed back in, which home games are you most looking forward to?
Buriram. Anyone that says it is not the highest profile match on the calendar is in denial.

And which away games are you most looking forward to?
My better half is from Chiang Mai so she will be itching for us to attend that fixture. We went a cup game about 4 years ago against the other Chiang Mai team, but the away stand at the university venue was the size of a shoe box and looked like it had been hurriedly assembled using a child’s Meccano set. United’s stadium looks much more suitable for purpose.

How do you plan to follow the matches you're not allowed to attend?
Probably on my desktop. I hope there are matches on free to view TV as well.

What do you make of your new signings?
We signed a new keeper, although I didn’t really feel we required one. Peerapong is a very modern goalkeeper and certainly not scared to involve himself in build-up play so at least it’s nice to see the board buying in to the new style of play. Jessie Curran should finally make his long awaited debut and take up a foreign quota spot this year. He’s a good worker and even if he doesn’t have the skills to win matches on his own, I think he will add much needed balance to the side with his height a physicality. I’m probably more excited to see the returning loanees and academy players in action to be honest. I followed them closely last season so I feel pretty invested in their success.

And what about the players you've let go?
Derley did a decent job for his, but he was Gama’s target man and less relevant to the current side. To his credit he adapted well to Mario’s style but his finishing could be sharper and he was prone to taking an extra touch or two whereas I don’t think Adisak will have that issue. I wish him well, though. Conversely, I’m not happy that Chatmongkol’s loan wasn’t made permeant. The deal was there to be made but we procrastinated and allowed The Bangkok Glass Phatum Thani United Football Club to sneak in. We’ll have trouble replacing him.

Which players will have the most impact this season?
Sardor scored 13 goals, and all of them came under Mario in the last 2/3 of the season. Significantly, they were all from open play too. Several league players were lauded for their goal tallies despite a majority coming from VAR aided penalty kick decisions. In Sardor we have a player that is the best in the league at finding pockets of space behind the main striker and with the selfless Adisak complementing him, he could further elevate his status. Equally, Popp has quickly become the heartbeat of the team and Rocha is a much needed cool head at the back. I’m also expecting young forwards, Poramet and Korrawich, to fully illustrate their capabilities this season in an attack minded set up.

If you could re-sign one of your club's former players, at the peak of his powers, who would it be?
2016 Tananboon Kesarat. He was instrumental in that title winning side and we could use another ball winner in this side in Chat’s absence.

If you could give your head coach one piece of advice, what would it be?
Be brave and take risks, although that’s pretty much his mantra anyway.

What do you think of your club's new kits?
I think we have to finalise a main sponsor before we can officially launch so I can’t yet answer that. There are some hideous kits floating around so I’m getting a little nervous. I would genuinely be embarrassed to wear at least 50% of the shirts I’ve seen from other teams. I prefer simple, symmetrical designs. SPC and Suphanburi are the best I’ve seen so far.

What song would you choose for your team's run out music on match days?
Great question! I was raised in the 90s so my tastes compromise of Hip-Hop and little else. I’d opt for something with an instantly recognisable intro, high tempo beat and an aggressive tone. Something like “The Choice is Yours” by Black Sheep or “Live at the BBQ” by Main Source. In fairness, I’m not sure others would feel quite as exhilarated hearing those anthems, but when we’ve played Guns and Roses or Nirvana it is has served the same purpose and even I have appreciated them.

Who are your favourites to win the league?
I think Buriram collected the most points in Leg 2 last year, and main rival’s BG have seemingly over-complicated their title defence. I can see the Isaan team putting another star on their shirt this season. I don’t think any other team can mount a serious title challenge. The rest will be vying for the remaining places.

Who is going down?
I’m not sure Khonkean Utd or Nongbua have shown enough ambition to beat the drop. One from another six or seven could make up the other relegation spot.

Which team would you most like to beat this season?
Buriram, obviously. Outside of that The Bangkok Glass Phatum Thani United FC threw several tantrum fits when we beat them at the end of last season which was something to savour. However realistically, if we want to progress we need to aim focus at Bangkok Utd and Chiang Rai. We beat neither last season so they represent the litmus test for us.

Is there anything else you'd like to add?
Just that I hope everybody keeps the faith and stays safe. There’s always next season, and so long as Thai football community remains engaged and healthy we can come back stronger and the 2023 season shapes up to be the most anticipated yet as we attempt to adjust to the ‘old’ normal.

NEW! Season Previews - 5. Ratchaburi: 2021

Here is Neal Oliver with his thoughts on Ratchaburi's chances for the season ahead.

What are your expectations for the season ahead?
With the effects of Covid, I expect another miserable season of watching a lot of Thai football on TV.  At least it has moved to a decent provider with AIS, and I have purchased a much larger TV for effect, LOL.  I might be able to make out the players better. I actually hate watching football on TV, but will make an exception for the Dragons.

Playing all of the football outside of the deep red zone will be very strange, and a crazy decision in my opinion e.g. Prachuap have had to relocate to a stadium in Buriram, where the threat from Covid is 3x worse than Prachuap Khiri Khan.  So what happens to home advantage is this period?

Some clubs had requested 25% supporter attendance the last time I checked.  I hope this does not include away support with supporters being encouraged to travel from deep red zones.  Double jabbed or not, they could still be spreading the virus.

Port really seem to be going for it with their player acquisitions in recent months, but I thought the same last season when they failed to buy success.

My honest feelings at the moment (they’ll probably change when the first ball is kicked) is I just can’t get excited about a season being played hundreds of miles away, and I’ll be stuck watching my TV.

Not having seen our new arrivals in action, I actually fear for Ratchaburi’s survival this season (but I am well known for being a pessimist).  We looked out of place most of the time in the AFC Champions League, and I fear our new arrivals won’t hit the mark.  This is probably because I haven’t seen us play in pre-season.  I I’m just sitting in the lockdown doldrums.

How do you think the lack of a regular pre season will affect your early performances?
Ratchaburi have a bit of an advantage, having played competitive football during the close season by way of the AFC Champions League, although we couldn’t have bought a goal in that competition. There hasn’t been too much of a break in training, so I hope the effects won’t be too great. Everybody will be in the same boat.

What are your thoughts on the plan for the way the season will start? And what would you have done differently?
I hate it.  I would have cancelled, and reverted back to the original ‘traditional’ season dates.  By the time we get to January/February, we should be over the worst of this pandemic.  Football in strange stadiums with no, or limited support is not football.  Football and supporters should go hand in hand.

How long do you think it will be before things can return to "normal"?
The answer is dependent upon vaccine roll-out.  The way Thailand is moving at the moment, I hope we’ll have broken the back of the problem by the end of the year.  Of course, we will have to jump through many extra hoops at the turnstile to prove we’ve been vaccinated, but I’m sure that will just become 2nd nature, and hopefully, eventually go away.

Once we're allowed back in, which home games are you most looking forward to?
I look forward to all of them, but I guess the atmosphere at Buriram games is always a bit special.  Buriram always seem to attract the biggest crowd.

And which away games are you most looking forward to?
I was actually looking forward to Chiang Rai, Chiang Mai, Khonkaen Utd and Nongbua Pitchaya because they are easily accessible by air (plus a hire car) from Hua Hin.  However, Chiang Rai and Khonkaen Utd happen during Covid restrictions, so that has thwarted my plans somewhat.  Outside of those, the only other game I will definitely go to, if allowed, is Prachuap.

There are other stadiums I’d like to visit, but the (provincial) stadium’s construct plus obnoxious security staff at PAT put me off.  I will go to some, but which I go to will be a last minute decision.

I keep promising myself a visit to Buriram, but it’s a long way, so who knows?  Never say never.  As one of the best stadiums in Thailand, I should make the effort.

What are your thoughts on your team's opening four fixtures?
This will be the opposite of last season when we played a bucket full of home fixtures at the start, which gave us a bumper boost to the season, and ultimately a place in the AFC Champions League.  This season we start with 4 away fixtures, which could have the opposite effect.  Of course, BG and Muangthong will be effectively be playing away as well.

What do you make of your new signings?
I will be honest, and say that I haven’t taken much notice.  There are 2 reasons:

Many Thai football supporters try to replicate real football, in particular regarding the transfer rumour mill.  I used to try to follow new signings, but found it absolutely impossible.  So much rubbish gets talked at transfer time, I used to think I knew where the club was going, only to find out people had been talking from where the sun doesn’t shine.  Close season/transfer window for me have become a non-event.  I switch off until the final squad is named, and we can see them run out on matchday.

The Thai League transfer process itself.  We get told a name who nobody has ever heard of, and we’re shown their demonstration video, which highlights maybe 30 moves they were involved in during the entirety of the previous season, or even longer.  So, we see maybe a 10 minute video, when the previous season lasted 2,700 minutes.  OK, I don’t expect to see every minute they’ve played, but I’d have more faith in the recruitment system if we had a proper scouting system.  I’ve asked about scouting many times, but I don’t believe the concept is understood in Thailand.  These players arrive, bringing great hope, but in reality, many play a couple of games and become bench warmers, while others don’t even feature.

Normally, I would develop an opinion on new signings during pre-season friendlies, but that isn’t going to happen this season.

And what about the players you've let go?
I am disappointed on 2 counts:

Philip Roller was a bit special.  I guess if he wanted success, he had to go, and I’m sure he won’t let Port down.  A great player, who will be hard to replace.

Lossemy Karaboue is the most influential player I’ve seen in a Dragons shirt.  I haven’t followed Ratchaburi for as many years as most, but we’ve had quite a turnover of players in that short time.  2 seasons ago, we seemed to put together some really good players, but good players don’t make a good team.  The first half of the season was still pretty mediocre, and I was watching the relegation zone as opposed to the top of the table.  Lossemy Karaboue arrived as a mid-term signing, and he was truly the missing link.

He bossed every game he played in, and knitted the good players together into a very good team.  He took us to the FA Cup final, where we were narrowly beaten by VAR.  Last season, he helped us into the AFC Champions League for the first time ever (such a shame he didn’t play).  I believe he could step straight into any T1 team, and make an immediate impact.  Why we’ve let him go, I have absolutely no idea.  I did read that he’d been replaced by somebody much better – really?  I didn’t see any new recruit in the Champions League who had ‘replaced’ him.  I wish him all of the best, and I’m sure he will be a major asset to Suphanburi, and I’m sure he will turn their recent form right around.

Which players will have the most impact this season?
I guess we have 4 players who Dragons fans will have to pin their hopes on this season:

Kamphon Pathomakkakul – I’ll be honest, in his first couple of games last season, I was calling him a headless chicken, and couldn’t understand why he’d replaced Ukrit Wongmeema between the sticks.  However, within a few weeks he had become one of my favourites.  His performances in the AFC Champions League were second to none.  I think it was Brian Cough who once said that having the best keeper in the league was worth 10 points.  So, I guess he will give us a 10 point advantage before we start.

Pawee Tanthatemee – this guy is astounding in defence.  It is easy to understand how he has broken into the national side.  In defence he is amazing.  The one area that he lets himself down is his finishing.  He often finds himself the recipient of the ball in attacking set pieces, but I think the goal is too small for him to hit.  If he could improve his finishing, he would be the complete package.

Steeven Langil – The Dragons own wizard.  What he can’t do with a football, hasn’t been invented yet.  On his day, I don’t think there is a defender in the land who would relish being against him.  A great, old fashioned winger.  I look forward to see him against Philip Roller this season.  That will be special.

I have no idea who our 4th player is yet, but if he’s better than Lossemy Karaboue, he must be very special.  I guess the rest of the Thai league will be in awe of this guy.

If you could re-sign one of your club's former players, at the peak of his powers, who would it be?
Simple - Lossemy Karaboue.  By far the most influential player of his time.  Brilliant.

If you could give your head coach one piece of advice, what would it be?
This is a perpetual joke.  Who is he this week?  Honestly, I saw we had a name during the ACL Champions League, and I’d been told he’d been with us for a few months.  Coaches at Ratchaburi are not very high profile.  Go to the English Premier League, and a coach is as high, or even higher in the club’s profile as the players.  At Ratchaburi ..?

The only advice I can give is find a player who knows where the back of the net is (Harry Kane is still available as I write this).  With the likes of Steeven Langil and Jakkapan Pornsai feeding him, it should be the simplest job in the world.

Please remember, good Thai strikers are as rare as rocking horse droppings.  We need a quality ‘proved’ foreigner.

What do you think of your club's new kits?
Club kits are a sore subject to me, but hopefully rectified this season.  When I first started supporting the Dragons, one of the big pluses was the Farang sized shirts.  After the first season, the club downsized.  I made my own Hua Hin Dragons shirts.  Last season our Chairperson, Boonying Nitikarnchana asked us to wear only authentic club regalia, so I stopped wearing the Hua Hin Dragons shirt.  Unable to buy an official club shirt, I had to resort to wearing Plymouth Argyle shirts.  Of course, wearing club colours would have been ideal, but not possible.

This season, we are in contact with the club, and they have said they will provide specially made Farang sized shirts.  So, whether I like them or not, it doesn’t matter.  They will be Ratchaburi shirts, so I have ordered one of each, and will wear them with pride (even with the space invader), like them or not.

What song would you choose for your team's run out music on match days?
Football isn’t football unless you run out to ‘Semper Fidelis’

Who are your favourites to win the league?
I think Buriram will be back this season.  You can’t keep a team like that down for too long.  They have been re-building, and after their fantastic run at the end of last season, they will take it. Port have invested a lot, but seem to let themselves down with silly problems such as an electricity supply.  They must be the leagues big spenders, just a shame they don’t have a stadium to match.
I also think BG Pathum will be there or there about.  They have some great players.

Who is going down?
I look at this season’s T1 teams, and it is tough.

Looking at the old guard, I would have thought Suphanburi was a favourite to go.  However, now they have signed a Superman in Lossemy Karaboue, so long as he doesn’t get injured, I expect him to transform them in to a top half team.  The other weak link is Police Tero.

Having lost 2 key plays, and not having a decent striker who I’ve seen, I actually have doubts about the Dragons this season. I hope my nerves are put at rest when I finally see this season’s team play at Khonkaen Utd on the 4th September.

I’d love to see Prachuap relegated, but that is just because they are Prachuap, and I don’t like them – a very personal thing.

Of course, the newbies will probably struggle also.  The step into T1 is a big one.

Which team would you most like to beat this season and why?
I’d love to see Ratchaburi get the better of Prachuap.  I don’t like Prachuap, but I don’t think I’ve ever seen Prachuap lose in real life.  It would be very satisfying.

Is there anything else you'd like to add?
I don’t think so.  As I’ve said, I tend to hibernate during the close season to avoid the constant Fake News that is the transfer window.  I will resume posting on the Hua Hin Dragons page this weekend, as the excitement of the new season re-commences.

NEW! Season Previews - 4. Buriram Utd: 2021

Buriram Utd supporter, Jamie Pinder (left) is next up with his season preview.

What are your expectations for your club in the season ahead?
Finish top 2 and maybe even be Champions again. It's a strange feeling to have already gone 2 years without finishing top.

How do you think the lack of a regular pre season will affect your early performances?
Everyone is really in the same boat. The ACL finished a while ago and I'm sure Buriram will have prepared well and be ready.

What are your thoughts on your team's opening four fixtures?
To start with 4 home games should give us an advantage as recently we've started slowly. It'll be fabulous to start with 4 wins.

What do you make of your new signings?
Buriram have been fairly quiet and I'm happy that the core of the team will remain the same.

And what about the players you've let go?
Sasalak's loan will be a big short term loss but when he returns I expect him to contribute hugely.

Which players will have the most impact this season?
Finally the "Supa" boys will perform and take the league by storm. Suphanut will have a true breakout season.

If you could re-sign one of your club's former players, at the peak of his powers, who would it be?
How could I look past Diogo? But very close behind I'd take Frank Achemapong (who still hasn't reached his peak) or Osmar Ibanez.

If you could give your head coach one piece of advice, what would it be?
Give Suphanut more game time!

Once we're allowed back in, which home games are you most looking forward to?
Muang Thong, of course, and BGPU. I'm really looking forward, also, to welcoming the fans from NongBua and Khon Kaen Utd. Those two matches will have a wild atmosphere.

And which away games are you most looking forward to?
Looking forward to visiting all 3 newly promoted teams. The two Isaan teams are on our schedule for the end of the season so we should be good to go by then.

How do you plan to follow the matches you're not allowed to attend?
On my sofa with my cats and the App.

What do you think of your club's new kits?
Our home kit is pretty normal but I love the recently released Orange 3rd kit. Still waiting on the proper away kit. What color will it be this year??

What song would you choose for your team's run out music on match days?
Two Tribes. Just love the vibe.

What are your thoughts on the plan for the way the season will start?
I think the season needs to start, with or without fans. The EPL is back so fans have had their desire to football rekindled. The TPL can hopefully piggyback on that interest but it's going to be tough without lots of fans getting to attend. We're incredibly lucky, as we stand, that we're allowed 25% capacity. If we can get 8,000 thru the gates it'll be great for both us, and the visiting teams.

How long do you think it will be before things can return to "normal"?
I'm in agreement that it'll probably be the second leg purely because of the fear factor of big crowds gathering together.

Who are your favourites to win the league?
Us and BG. I really can't see any other teams mounting a sustained challenge. Other teams will flatter to deceive, as they did last year. I said, back in October last year, that BG would win and Buriram United, who were down near the bottom at the time, would finish second. It's a marathon, you know.

Who is going down?
I have really no idea. Same as in the EPL, you have to look at the newly promoted clubs. One will have an outstanding season and finish top half, the other two will be fighting all year (but don't ask me which ones!)

Which team would you most like to beat this season?
BG more than Muang Thong. Need to put them in their place.

Is there anything else you'd like to add?
Just hoping for some exciting games and looking forward to catching up with everyone over the next 9 months. I really enjoy meeting everyone thru the season and having some colorful banter. We have a great bunch of fans on Twitter and I feel priviliged to be a part of it.

NEW! Season Previews - 3. Nakhon Ratchasima: 2021

Nakhon Ratchasima fan, Russ John is next up with his 2021/22 season preview.

What are your expectations for your club in the season ahead?
Cautiously optimistic, top 10 would be great.

How do you think the lack of a regular pre season will affect your early performances?
Swatcats have been playing training matches so not much affect.

What are your thoughts on the plan for the way the season will start? And what would you have done differently?
Well full marks to the FAT for having a go. I personally would not have attempted a start so early but I hope it all goes according to plan.

How long do you think it will be before things can return to "normal"?
Hmm, difficult. Depends on vaccination rates. I would tentatively hope that season 2022 starting September may see football back to normal.

Once we're allowed back in, which home games are you most looking forward to?
All Isaan opponents, Nong Bua, Konkaen Utd and ....errrr!!!

And which away games are you most looking forward to?
Always enjoy Chonburi, would like to get to Konkaen Utd.

How do you plan to follow the matches you're not allowed to attend?
Well if my internet connection holds up, online.

What are your thoughts on your team's opening four fixtures?
Three winnable games could get us off to a great start.

What do you make of your new signings?
Three unknowns, Kwame Karikari, Marco Sahanek and Kwabena Appiah, just hope they deliver.

And what about the players you've let go?
Kanuk was a massive loss and I was sad to see Jessie Curran go.

Which players will have the most impact this season?
Amadou will always be a threat. Hard to tell if our newcomers will have a major impact.

If you could re-sign one of your club's former players, at the peak of his powers, who would it be and why?
Lee Tuck, I just loved his spunk.

If you could give your head coach one piece of advice, what would it be?
Five at the back with defensive midfield cover. Lamp it up to Appiah and Karikari - this is going to be a no frills, no nonsense season.

What do you think of your club's new kits?
It's orange, it's OK. Cannot really get excited about shirts when we cannot attend matches.

What song would you choose for your team's run out music on match days?
"Things can only get better", D:Ream.

Who are your favourites to win the league?
No one will come near the Glass Rabbits, next question.

Who else do you think can challenge?
Usual suspects plus your lot!!

Who is going down?
Chiang Mai, Konkaen Utd and Suphanburi.

Which team would you most like to beat this season?
It would be nice to beat all three of our Isaan neighbours. To be top dogs in Isaan would be a real achievement.

Is there anything else you'd like to add?
These are hard times, be patient, be positive, stay safe, enjoy the football in whatever form it presents itself.

Chonburi 3-2 SriRacha - Match Report: 2009

TPL
Chonburi 3-2 SriRacha
Princess Srindhorn Stadium
Attendance: 4,209
Saturday 22nd August, 2009

Match Report
A pulsating derby match that, in journalese, had "everything". Chonburi started brightly, passing the ball well and looking to put the two recent setbacks behind them. Even before their fourth minute goal they had a few chances to take the lead, with Ekkaphan and Micheal Byrne (starting for the first time) both going close.

However, it was to be the former who broke the deadlock with a stunning strike into the bottom corner. SriRacha responded well and Nattapong had to clear off the line following a mix up in the defence. But it was the "home" team who were dictating the play. Byrne in particular looking busy and shooting at every opportunity. This policy paid off when he broke his duck midway through the first half to put the Sharks 2-0 up.

At half time the main topic of conversation seemed to revolve around how many goals we would score. Unfortunately, nobody from SriRacha was eavesdropping. The Blue Marlin came out with renewed vigour and were causing us all sorts of problems with their bold attacking approach.

Therefore it came as no real surprise when they pulled one back. However, the manner of the goal had the Chonburi fans fuming. A SriRacha defender seemed to go right through the back of Kone to win the ball. A foul in anybody's book. Amazingly, the referee waved play on. The chorus of boos that greeted the resultant goal could probably be heard in Rayong.

But, it was to get worse. A few minutes later a long hopeful through ball was completely misjudged by Chonlatit. As the advancing attacker nipped in behind and bore down on goal, Kosin charged off his line to meet him. There's no question that it was a penalty but a red card? The forward was definitely going away from goal but he made a meal (including starters, pudding, cheese & crackers and coffee) of the challenge and went down dramatically. Needless, to say, the referee's popularity took an even bigger hit.

After a lengthy delay, Suchin entered the fray - at the expense of Byrne - but could do nothing to stop the perfectly struck spot kick. So, 2-2 with twenty minutes left, Chonburi down to ten men and SriRacha with their tails up, it was going to be all hands to the pump. However, Zico had other ideas. I've been quite critical of him and hs tactics recently but now he was about to play a masterstroke. Deciding to go three at the back and take the game to SriRacha was a gamble that could have backfired and he would have been slaughtered on here.

Thankfully, the move paid off and as we entered stoppage time (5 minutes), Man of the Match, Ekkaphan sealed the points with another fine finish. The home support went crazy.

The remaining time was played out without any further scares and the celebrations that greeted the final whistle were tinged with relief.

An extremely entertaining game with, just about, the right result. I'm pleaed that we are back on top and have shown that we can roll up our sleeves when the odds are seemingly stacked against us. As for SriRacha, they are now in serious trouble at the bottom. I genuinely hope that they can pull themselves clear - starting with a win next week against Muang Thong United.

NEW! Season Previews - 2. Port: 2021

Port fan, Tommie Duncan, shares his thoughts on his team's chances for the season ahead.

What are your expectations for your club in the season ahead?
Minimal at best. No fans at first, using an app to access matches on TV...no fun.

How do you think the lack of a regular pre season will affect your early performances?
Port played in the ACL which you think would help, but with Port, you never know. I imagine the first of the season will see some pretty lackluster and sloppy play.

What are your thoughts on the plan for the way the season will start? And what would you have done differently?
We'll see. I'm not sure what I would have done. Bubble areas? It's a tough situation no matter what you do. And very difficult to plan with things constantly changing.

How long do you think it will be before things can return to "normal"?
I think we are looking at the first of next year at best, but really think everything will be as close to normal as possible by Songkhran of next year. It's going to take time, Even with high vaccination rates Israel is having a tough time with Delta. It's just not looking promising.

How do you plan to follow the matches you're not allowed to attend?
Guess it's AIS Play.

Once fans are allowed back in, which home games are you most looking forward to?
I enjoy all home games, but of course MTU!

And which away games are you most looking forward to?
CRUTD and Chiang Mai will be nice trips.

What are your thoughts on your team's opening four fixtures?
Port usually perform well at the first of the season. With a new coach, it will be interesting to see if this still holds true.

What do you make of your new signings?
Meh, not amazingly excited about any of them. Still don't have the big nasty Victor type CB or a really amazing keeper. Hopefully Baggio will excel. Probably more excited about Dusit as coach than I am about the new players.

And what about the players you've let go?
Not happy to see Bonilla depart (assume he is back to BU), Think he would have made an impact this season. Not sure Patino is the man.

Which players will have the most impact this season?
Hard to tell. Sure the usual suspects, Suarez, Pakorn, etc.

If you could re-sign one of your club's former players, at the peak of his powers, who would it be and why?
Leandro for sure.

If you could give your head coach one piece of advice, what would it be?
Fitness, diet, and discipline.

What do you think of your club's new kits?
Not bad, the home kit is quite nice.

What song would you choose for your team's run out music on match days?
I still like This is Khlongtoey. No idea why they stopped playing it.

Who are your favourites to win the league?
Glass for sure. They are the strongest squad by far.

Who else do you think can challenge?
Burriram might have a shot depending on the quality of foreigners they sign.

Who is going down?
Honestly I haven't spent that much time looking at the teams, so I don't have a clue.

Which team would you most like to beat this season?
Glass, as they are the class of the league at the moment.

Is there anything else you'd like to add?
Each and every year it gets tougher and tougher to stay engaged. Even without the pandemic the league is just not as compelling for me as it was over a decade ago when I started going to matches. It would be nice to see them get it together, become more fan oriented, and really develop a top class league ala Japan and Korea. I'm not holding my breath.

NEW! Season Previews - 1. Samut Prakan City: 2021

Samut Prakan City fan, Phil Williams kicks off our series of season previews.

What are your expectations for the season ahead?
Compared to the last two seasons and a couple of 6th place finishes, I'm predicting a season of relative struggle with games played out in front of dwindling home attendances. I wish I could be more optimistic than that.

How do you think the lack of a regular pre season will affect your early performances?
I dread to think because it feels like we have a completely new starting XI compared to last season and new arrivals just haven't had time to get to know each other's game. That said, all the premier league teams are in the same boat.

What are your thoughts on the plan for the way the season will start?
I'm amazed the season is getting started so I can only applaud the Thai FA's plan. They've done their best.

How long do you think it will be before things can return to "normal"?
I don't see this happening until January next year at the earliest. I just feel Thailand is too obssessed with low infection numbers, regardless of what percentage of the population have been jabbed.

Once fans are allowed back in, which home games are you most looking forward to?
Any game that gets us three points.

And which away games are you most looking forward to?
I was looking forward to Nongbua's pink stadium most of all but sadly, that isn't going to happen, so next on the list would be away to newly promoted Khon Kaen Utd.

How do you plan to follow the matches you're not allowed to attend?
I've put a scatter cushion on the floor behind the sofa and I'll watch the TV from there.

What are your thoughts on your team's opening fixtures?
Another tough start. We don't get much out of Chiang Rai or Bangkok United but hopefully there might be points against either Nongbua or Police Tero. Please let there be points against Nongbua or Police Tero.

What do you make of your new signings?
In general, underwhelming. Chaiyawat from Chiang Rai was a decent signing and I'm keeping fingers crossed that the big man Eliandro does well following his move from Chonburi but the rest of the signings - not to sound too harsh - have been second division, on loan journeymen. We just haven't signed like for like in terms of the players we've let go.

And what about the players you've let go?
I don't know where to start. It's been horrible to watch the team we love get so brutally dismantled. It's felt a bit like Man United getting rid of Best, Law and Charlton at their peak of their careers. We've lost our goalscoring talisman (Tardelli) Our two best defenders (Jakkapan and Ernesto) The club captain and heartbeat of the team (Peeradol) and now crowd favourite, Teerapol Yoyei has buggered off to Port. And of course star man, Jaroensak, won't be around too much longer either.

Which players will have the most impact this season?
There's an awful lot resting on the broad shoulders of Eliandro. He's going to need to get us 15-20 goals I feel.

If you could re-sign one of your club's former players, at the peak of his powers, who would it be and why?
I'd have Peeradol back. I still can't imagine a Samut Prakan team without him in the line-up.

If you could give your head coach one piece of advice, what would it be?
Not so much advice but you promised the fans you would stay for one more season and that's exactly what you've done. If the board haven't supported you in the transfer market, then that's not your fault. We'll get behind you this season wherever the club finishes. We know you will do your best.

Which team would you most like to beat this season and why?
I always enjoy beating Port of course but as I said earlier, I'll take three points against anybody.

What do you think of your club's new kits?
Blue and white hoops? What's not to love. Now it's just a question of when they become available. Merchandising is definitely not our strong point.

What song would you choose for your team's run out music on match days?
At the moment, probably some dark track from an early Cure album.

Who are your favourites to win the league?
Clubs wi' money so Port, Buriram or BG Pathum. Take your pick.

Who else do you think can challenge?
I don't think any other team comes close to those three mentioned. Everyone else is just making up the numbers.

Who is going down and why?
I don't care as long as there are three teams that finish below Samut Prakan and it may well come down to that.

Is there anything else you'd like to add?
I haven't come across as very optimistic and I think that's understandable - but perhaps this set of players can surprise us. It's going to be a season of consolidation and rebuilding and I predict a bumpy ride. I'll just be happy to still be in the top flight come next season. I'm not setting my sights any higher than that.

Chang Chonburi Invitation Cup - Previews & Results: 2016

Chang Chonburi Invitation Cup 2016

Previews

Nakorn Ratchasima
by Russ John
NRFC continue their pre season build up by competing in the CHANG CHONBURI INVITATION tournament. The Swatcats have had a mixed batch of friendly results against lower league opposition, with the build up being described as satisfactory but not exceptional.

Having let go Dominic Adiyeah and Lee Tuck apparently in a contract dispute with the club, the club’s main attacking options appears to be Marco Tagbajumi and Promphong Kransumrong. With Prompong’s well publicized court case still ongoing, he would appear to be out of the reckoning at present.

Tagbajumi is a big, strong, bustling striker who has impressed and if he can link up with Bjorn Lindemann playing “in the hole” it could form a formidable partnership.

Other players to watch out for are the midfield powerhouse Noah Chivuta and our Japanese stopper Satoshi Nagano.

My prediction for the tournament is that The Swatcats will overcome Army and lose on penalties to the hosts in the final. Whatever the result, I am sure that Chonburi will host a most successful tournament.

Army Utd

Our preparations for the new season are set to step up a gear as we get ready to make our annual trip down the coast to the Chonburi Chang Invitational tournament. This should be a good chance to see where we find ourselves ahead of our opening day fixture against Bangkok United next week.

It has been a tough winter at the Home of Gentlemen which has seen our foreign contingent of Melvin de Leuuw, Ernesto, Wellington and Alex all leave to be replaced by unknown journeyman players from the lower leagues, several of which were relegated with Krabi FC last season.

Preseason so far has been tough as twice we have been hit for five by Bangkok United and more worryingly Thai Honda from D1. Has father time finally caught up with the creeking legs of captain Chaiwat and full back Dawut, both of which are entering the twilight of their careers?

On paper our starting XI should be good enough for us to avoid a relegation fight but a lot depends on us keeping brilliant Brazilian Botti fit for the season and hoping that Anuwat can maintain his form from last season. This is a big season for U23 Thailand star Ping Thossawat as well who disappointed at times last season and needs to make the step up this year as our other options in midfield are limited to say the least.

Probably my biggest worry for the new season is where are the goals going to come from? Our attacking options going into the new season seem to be focused on Kai Hirano, Thanakorn and overrated Thai national player Mongkol who only managed 15 league goals between them last season.

It was this lack of goals that saw us plummet down the table in the second half of last season as we struggled to only 3 wins, 10 defeats and 4 draws with us averaging only a goal a game. There has been little over the break to suggest that this form has been addressed.

We have worked our way through 6 managers during the last two seasons as well so it will be interesting to see if our clubs unwavering loyalty to the manager who oversaw the dreadful back end of last season continues or if the axe will be swinging early into the new season once again.

Chonburi FC

The first thing I'll be looking for is how the 9-0 drubbing in Japan has affected the players' - and the coach's - confidence. There was a cautious feeling of optimism at the Yangon Utd match but that was all blown away in Tokyo. It will be interesting to see how we react.

Hopefully, those fans who still think everything is hunky dory will also have been given a wake up call by our AFC Champions League nighmare. They might just realise that we are not quite as good as they think we are.

That said, I still think the locals will turn up in numbers for Friday night's opener. We are a loyal bunch and everyone will be keen to show that we're right behind the team. I expect a healthy crowd and a decent atmosphere - for a pre season tournament. However, it could be very different on Sunday, if we're not in the final.

Even though these matches are really only glorified friendlies, I hope we'll be taking them seriously. One of the biggest mistakes in our AFC "campaign" was lack of preparation. For a club that usually plays friendlies more often than league games, our build up to the continent's premier competition was strangely muted. With the start of the TPL season only a week away (yikes!), we really need to get it right this weekend.

From what I've seen so far, the two new Koreans look impressive and it is good to have Suttinun back to full fitness. Otherwise, all the old problems seem to remain. No full backs and the lack of nastiness and genuine creativity.

Rodrigo was very unlucky not to get on the score sheet against Yangon Utd, but was equally lucky not to get an early red in Tokyo - just think how bad it could have been! He's no Thiago but I'm prepared to give him a chance. I get the feeling he's a confidence player so a couple of goals this weekend would do him a power of good.

As for the rest, they need to convince us that they're good enough. Pin up boy Kroerkrit in particular must show that he can live up to the hype. Tiredness due to international commitments can't be trotted out as an excuse this year so go on, son, prove you're really worth all that adoration.

All in all, I'm looking forward to the next couple of days. It will be good to catch up with a few people and watch some (hopefully entertaining) football whilst having a drink and something to eat. Let's ope that 'm feeling a lot more confident about the year ahead by 9:00pm on Sunday.
