BANGKOK GLASS AND CHONBURI ENDS IN STALEMATE
by Malky
TPL championship hopefuls, Bangkok Glass and Chonburi, played out a 0-0 draw at the Leo Stadium.
The first chance of the game came on 9 minutes when Sintaweechai had to tip a Samuel Ajayi shot around the post. From the resultant corner, Hiek's downward header bounced narrowly over the bar.
Chonburi's best chance of the half came on 14 minutes when the unmarked Kroekrit headed wide when he really should have it the target. Had Pipob been on the end of the cross, surely he would have opened the scoring.

The home team seemed happy to allow Chonburi possession and hit on the break using Ajayi and Saruta's pace.

On the half hour, Ajayi's shot smacked the base of the post after he'd played a one-two with Chatree. Minutes later the outside of the same post was struck by a cross from Sutee.
Chonburi had been quiet, but they reminded BG that they were still in the game when Ludo's powerful shot was knocked wide by Kritsakorn.

In first half injury time, Sintaweechai was called into action again to make a good save from Saruta's shot across goal. That was the last action of the half as the score was goalless at the break.
The second 45 minutes speaking politely was drab. The closest the game got to a goal was a Suree header from a Chonburi corner that sailed 3 feet over the bar.

Overall,  a point each is a reasonable return for both sides. The pair of them remain undefeated and their defences have yet to breached.

THAI PORT 1-2 CHONBURI
by Malky
Thiago Cunha netted twice as Chonburi won 2-1 on Thai Port's TPL swansong.

Both sides wasted early chances with Thiago knocking the ball into Wanlop's legs after being sent on his way by Jetsadakorn while Steven Robb missed a sitter with the goal gaping at his mercy.

Thai Port fell behind on 12 minutes when a long ball caught Termchai napping which allowed Thiago the easy task of stroking the ball past Wanlop.

Ten minutes later, another long ball from Chonburi was this time missed by Thongchai and as the left back tried to retrieve the situation, he fouled Thaigo in the box. It was a rather harsh award by the referee, but Thiago wasn't complaining as he coolly sent Wanlop the wrong way to make it 2-0.

However, the hosts began to find their feet with Sarawut fizzing an effort across the goal and Ri Myong Jun headed onto the post after a teasing cross from Robb.

Steven Robb then atoned for his earlier miss when he prodded home Watson's low cross on 45 minutes to give Port a glimmer of hope.

The clock whittled down slowly after the break with few chances for either side. Robb blasted a shot into Sinthaweechai's midriff while Ri Myong Jun's spin and shot in the box flew wide. The closest the Sharks came was when newly introduced sub, Paritas, fired over the bar from close in.

At the end of the game, there was a pitch invasion from the Klong Toei youngsters as they went in search of goodies from the players. Both sides now have about three months to prepare for next season. The pair might be in different divisions but the target of winning their respective leagues will be the same.

Match report
PHETCHABURI 0-4 CHONBURI
In spite of the reservations about the team selection in my preview, this was every bit as comfortable as the result would suggest. In fact, if we’d have scored eight no-one could have had any complaints. I can only remember the home side having two shots on target, whilst we were guilty of squandering a number of good chances at the other end. However, it would be churlish to find fault after such an emphatic and, dare I say, professional victory.

The starting eleven certainly raised a few eyebrows – with only four regular first teamers making the cut -  but not nearly as many as the pitch. It was a shocker. If I say that it was the worst one I’ve seen in over fifteen years of following Thai football, you’ll get an idea of just how bad it was. Prior to kick off I commented that it could only get worse if it were to rain. Right on cue, the heavens opened. Thankfully it was only a light shower and it didn’t last long but it had certainly made the already rotten surface a lot worse.

It was quite clear from the early exchanges that the biggest threat would come from the conditions underfoot and not the opposition. Both Diakite and Kiatprawut looked very uncomfortable when the ball was passed to them in the back line and we had a couple of nervy moments in the opening few minutes. Sinthaweechai in goal was also the victim of a horrendous bobble from a back pass, which squeezed under his foot and headed towards the unguarded net. Fortunately he was able to react quickly enough and raced back to clear the danger and spare his blushes.

As the match wore on, the visitors gradually adapted their game and once Noppanon put us in front with a lovely turn and finish on fifteen minutes, the result was never in doubt. Dossevi, who was getting a rare start, was playing well and seemed to relish running at the Phetchaburi defence at every opportunity. The big striker was rewarded for his efforts just before half time when he rose to head home a right wing cross and give a fairer reflection of the first half had gone.

After the break, the home side showed a little more determination to get forward and launched a series of attacks, thus forcing Sinthaweechai into his first really serious action since his potential “egg on the face” moment in the opening period. However, the in-form keeper dealt with any threats quite comfortably.

In spite of the home side’s pressure, it came as no real surprise when the Sharks added a third on fifty eight minutes when Akarawin slid home Noppanon’s first time cross. From here on in it really was a case of “how many?”

With the Phetchaburi players clearly tiring and obviously dis-heartend, Heng rather cruelly brought on Therdsak and Pipob to have some fun during the last thirty minutes. There then followed wave after wave of Chonburi attacks when the players were clearly trying to trying to set each other up to score. But in spite of all the pressure, there was only to be one more goal added when Therdsak blasted the ball into the roof of the net from Pipob’s pass.

So, 4-0, job done and on into the next round. It was a thorough performance from Chonburi and the only real downside was what looked like a serious injury to Kushida. The ever present Japanese player was clattered from behind late in the first half and didn’t return after the interval. I can only hope that this was just a cautionary measure and that the rapidly improving midfielder will be fit enough to feature at the weekend.

AFC Cup Citizen 3-3 Chonburi - Match Report: 2012

AFC Cup
Group G
Citizen 3-3 Chonburi
Mong Kok Stadium
Wednesday 11th April, 2012

Match Report
by the-afc.com
Hong Kong's Citizen scored twice in stoppage time through Chiu Chun Kit and Sham Kwok Fai to deny Thailand's Chonburi a place in the last 16 of the AFC Cup as Wednesday's Group G encounter ended in a dramatic 3-3 draw at Mong Kok Stadium.

Chonburi appeared to have posted a third win of the campaign which would have secured qualification from Group G with two games remaining after goals from Natthaphong Samana and second-half substitutes Pipob On-mo and Sukree Etae had cancelled out Yuto Nakamura's eighth-minute opener for Citizen.

But after Chiu headed home in the first minute of added time, Sham bundled home a corner with the last kick of the game to leave table-topping Chonburi a point clear of Singapore's Home United, with third-placed Citizen a further three points off the pace.

"It was a great effort from the players. We concentrated on defending in the first half because Chonburi are very strong. In the second half we focused on attacking, but they took advantage of our mistakes and took a 3-1 lead. But we never gave up and it was a great effort," said Citizen coach Chu Kwok Kuen.

"We scored in added time and at that moment we were not thinking about a draw or winning, we just wanted to make the score more respectable. It is an extra bonus that we can get a tie. A 3-2 defeat is not a bad defeat, but a 3-3 draw is an extra bonus for us."

Chonburi took the game to Citizen from the first whistle, but after eight minutes the home side took the lead against the run of play as the visiting defence were caught square just inside their own half and Nakamura raced clear before coolly lifting the ball over exposed goalkeeper Sinthaweechai Hathairattanakool from just inside the area.

The lead, though, lasted just 12 minutes as Chonburi were rewarded for their early dominance. Natthaphong ghosted in at the back post to hook a low cross from French midfielder Geoffrey Doumeng back across the face of goal and into the net with goalkeeper Tse Tak Him rooted to the spot.
Chonburi continued to dominate but lacked a cutting edge up front, while Citizen posed a constant counterattacking threat and came close to regaining the lead after 32 minutes as Sham Kwok Keung shot narrowly wide following a patient build-up from the home side.

Citizen goalkeeper Tse almost handed Chonburi the lead two minutes before the break after failing to hold a rasping drive from Cote d'Ivoire defender Fode Diakite, but the custodian made amends with a smart reflex save to deny Ludovick Kengne as the Cameroonian striker pounced on the loose ball inside the six-yard area.

Opposing captains Therdsak Chaiman and Festus Baise both came close to a breakthrough in a cagey start to the second half with both sides struggling for quality possession.

But with 21 minutes remaining Chonburi completed the turnaround as Pipob's towering header from Therdsak's inviting right wing delivery gave Tse no chance.

And with two minutes remaining, Sukree found space on the right side of the Citizen penalty area with the home side pushing forward and squeezed his low shot between Tse and the upright.

Chiu's glancing header in the first minute of stoppage-time appeared to have handed Citizen a late consolation but the home side completed the comeback in dramatic fashion as Sham turned home Wong Yiu Fu's corner following a melee inside the Chonburi six-yard area.

"I am not satisfied with the performance of the defenders. We always have the same problem in away games. This match was the opportunity to overcome this problem, but we failed. We have the same problem with away games in the local league," said Chonburi coach Withaya Laohakul.

"I have a lot of respect for Citizen's spirit. Even though they were 3-1 down, they came back. They were focused, concentrated and determined and fought very bravely to come back.

"We still are aiming for first place in the group. A win in this match would have made it comfortable for us, but we now still have to fight."

CHONBURI CRUISE AHEAD OF CITIZEN CLASH
by www.the-afc.com

Chonburi enjoyed a confidence-boosting 5-1 win over Esan United in the Thai Premier League (TPL) on Saturday prior to their departure to Hong Kong for the Wednesday's AFC Cup Matchday 4 clash with Citizen.

Inaugural AFC Champions League MVP Therdsak Chaiman, who came off the bench to open the scoring from the penalty spot in last Tuesday's AFC Cup Group G win over Citizen, was again on target at the Chonburi Stadium, with the 38-year-old former BEC Tero Sasana star giving the Sharks a second-minute lead.

Yai Nilwong levelled for the visitors just before the half-hour mark only for three goals in a nine-minute spell early in the second-half from former Togo international Thomas Dossevi, who is not part of Chonburi's AFC Cup squad, to turn the tide of the match firmly in the Sharks favour.

Bireme Diouf sealed the win with Chonburi's fifth on the stroke of full-time to put the AFC Cup Group G leaders in a confident state of mind ahead of Wednesday's meeting with Citizen, who are third in the table behind Singapore Armed Forces on goal difference.

Chonburi opened up a three-point lead at the top of Group G in the AFC Cup after second-half goals by Therdsak Chaiman and Fode Diakite gave the Thai Premier League side a 2-0 victory over Hong Kong side Citizen on Tuesday.

Therdsak, who came on as a half-time substitute, converted a penalty three minutes into the second half and Diakite headed home on the hour mark to give the Thai club a fully deserved victory at the Chonburi Stadium.

The hosts dominated the contest, which was played on a slick pitch which had been saturated by an earlier rain storm, and they were unlucky not to go into the half-time break with the lead after squandering a number of opportunities in the first half including one effort that came back off the woodwork.

Therdsak came on at the interval to replace Ludovick Kengne and the change paid almost immediate dividends when Chonburi were awarded a penalty shortly after the restart for a handball by a Citizen defender. The former Thailand international playmaker, who was MVP in the inaugural AFC Champions League, stepped up and fired the ball home to put the Thai club a goal up.

Diakite then sealed the win in the 60th minute when Natthapong Samana floated in a delightful cross that the Ivorian defender met with a thumping header into the back of the net.

Despite the win, Chonburi coach Withaya Laohakul was critical of what he felt was a lacklustre performance by his side.

"I actually thought it was just a fair performance by our team and our goals felt like a bonus tonight," he said.

"We scored from a penalty and a set piece but it was still not a good performance for us. We will look for our players to improve and I hope that we can play with a better style when we take on Citizen again next week."

Citizen coach Chu Kwok Kuen felt that the wet conditions hampered his side's performance.
"We did well in the first half because we can play well with a defensive style, but because of the rain and the wet pitch, we misplaced several of our passes," said Chu.

"After we conceded the penalty, our performance went down and we finally lost the game. Hopefully, we will do better when we play against them at home next week."

Samut Songkhram v Chonburi - The Aftermath: 2012

The aftermath of a controversial match in Samut Songkhram in July, 2012. The game had been played in atrocious conditions and then visiting fans - and a player - were confronted by home supporters after the final whistle.

CLUB TO MAKE OFFICIAL COMPLAINT?
29th July, 2012

I have heard through various sources that the club is planning to make an official complaint to the Thai Premier League and the Football Association of Thailand about the events surrounding Saturday's fixture with Samut Songkhram. Club officials have been contacting fans to ask them to supply details about their experiences at the match.

I understand that some of the people approached have already made claims that women and children were threatened by individuals wearing Samut Songkhram colours during the disturbances that followed the Sharks' 1-0 defeat. There are also claims that a Chonburi player, who had made his own way to the ground with his family, was followed by a group of local men in a car after the game. He informed the club's management and the police were called to deal with the matter.

The club already has video and photographic evidence of injuries sustained by Chonburi fans and damage to vehicles belonging to visiting supporters sustained in the violence following the final whistle.

It is also understood that the state of the pitch and the lack of work done by the hosts to make it playable will form a large part of the complaint, along with the dangerous nature of the stand occupied by travelling fans and the lack of security inside and outside the stadium.

Samut Songkhram have already issued an apology and paid for the hospital treatment of those people who were hurt. They have also stated their intentions to improve their facilities in the future but, as far as I'm aware, have made no reference to the shocking state of the playing surface and their failure to deal with it.

HENG BLASTS "THAT" PITCH
29th July, 2012

Witthaya Laohkul has launched a blistering attack on the state of Samut Songkhram's pitch. The experienced coach blasted the surface as totally unacceptable for the Thai Premier League and challenged the club's management to improve it.

He told reporters, "We had worked hard to prepare for this match but the conditions were ridiculous." He also revealed that Adul Lahso and Fode Bangaly were fasting for Ramadan and are unlikely to play in Wednesday's FA Cup tie against Buriram.

You can read my thoughts on the state of the pitch here: Glug, glug, glug.

Chonburi 0-0 TTM - Match Report: 2012

TPL
Chonburi 0-0 Thailand Tobacco Monopoly
Chonburi Stadium
Attendance: 5,922
Sunday 5th August, 2012

Match Report
It's difficult to know what to write about last night's match, as it was every bit as dull as the scoreline suggests. Tobacco Monopoly are a dour side and it really is painful to watch them. They contributed absolutely nothing in the way of entertainment yesterday and I'm struggling to remember anything about them other than their roughhouse tackling, their petty time wasting tactics and the bizarre antics of their coaching staff.

Having said that, we weren't much better. We seemed to lack ideas and the spark that has been present during our recent good run was certainly missing. And for this, I think that the coach must take a fair portion of the blame. His team selection was odd, to say the least: Kiatprawut at centre half? No Geoffrey? Puttinan substituted after thirty minutes? And, to cap it all, Therdsak on the left wing? He's as much a left winger as Boris Johnson! Strange choices. Strange tactics. The latter in particular was madness, as we had Arthit on the bench. Why wasn't he playing?

Needless to say, we struggled to find any sort of rhythm and this led to frustration all round. The players seemed to be frustrated with the way they'd been asked to play and the fans were frustrated  by our inability to break down the worst team in the Thai Premier League. In fact, such was the disgruntlement in the stands that the reaction to Thomas Dossevi's second half substitution spoke volumes. There was a moment of stunned disbelief as the Frenchman's number was held up, followed by complete silence and then by one or two boos. I was half expecting a chant of, "You don't know what you're doing" to start up. Dossevi had been one of our better performers and to see him replaced by a defensive midfielder - Phanuwat - at a time when we needed to score a goal was more than the majority of home fans could stomach.

This annoyance manifested itself after the final whistle when a couple of vexed Chonburi supporters let their feelings be known by launching into a tirade against Heng as he made his way from the dugout. The couple were quickly ushered away by security staff but not before they had voiced their (and many other people's) opinions. It was a sad way to end the evening and I hope that they don't get punished by the club. The incident, like the match and our title aspirations, should just be forgotten.
