New! Chonburi v Bangkok Utd - Top Five Matches: 2023

5. TPL
Chonburi 1-0 Bangkok Utd
(Scorer: Thiago Cunha)
Chonburi Stadium
Attendance: 3,871
22nd November, 2015

Well, after that I have to take a deep breath. Entertainment value for the neutral, 9/10. Tactical and technical value, 2/10. For the coaches, a visit to the hospital to have blood pressure checked. As the match wore on and especially towards the end of the second half, it resembled a frantic schoolboy game. No shape or formation, both teams charging end to end creating chances and open goals with seemingly every attack. Frantic stuff, and as I said, good entertainment.
Peter Reeves

4. League Cup
Quarter Final
Bangkok Utd 0-1 Chonburi (AET)
Thammasat Stadium
(Scorer: Yoo Byung-Soo)
Attendance: 2,279
13th March, 2022

Yoo Byung-Soo's clinical finish, midway through the first period of extra time, was enough to see the Sharks progress to the last four, following a tough 120 minutes at Thammasat.

3. TPL
Bangkok Utd 2-4 Chonburi
(Scorers: Lukian (2), Phanupong, Si Thu Aung)
Thammasat Stadium
Attendance: 2,692
Wednesday 3rd April, 2019

What a result! As enjoyable as it was unexpected. Even though Bangkok Utd aren’t (yet) firing on all cylinders, a 4-2 win at their place is still a major achievement. Sure, we rode our luck at times, but we came with a game plan and it paid off. You could see that the players were concentrating, working hard, and determined to get something out of the fixture. So, overall, a wonderful night in a cold and wet Rangsit. It was a pleasure to have been there – along with 102 others – and went a long way to erasing the memory of that 7-2 defeat a couple of years ago. As I Tweeted joyfully after the final whistle: It was the best performance at Thammasat since The Clash in 1982. Happy days!
Dale Farrington

2. TPL
Chonburi 4-2 Bangkok Utd
(Scorers: Thiago dos Santos Cunha (2), Nurul Sriyangem, Yuki Bamba)
Chonburi Stadium
Attendance: 6,685
26th October, 2014

After a fairly even first half, Chonburi turned on the style after the break to romp to a convincing win and spark joyous scenes. It really should have been more and the visitors' second goal came with the last kick off the match, to give the final score an uneven look. The title is still in our own hands.
Dale Farrington

1. TPL
Chonburi 5-1 Bangkok Utd
(Scorers: Arthit Sunthornphit (2), Anderson Machado, Kone Mohamed, Natthapong Samana)
Princess Srindhorn Stadium
Attendance: 3,663
2nd May, 2009

As comfortable as the score line suggests. We scored in the first few minutes and then sat back as Utd created a few decent chances before deservedly equalising. However, this seemed to wake up our players and we took back the initiative. A large (well behaved) turnout - how nice it is to see all four sides of the ground populated - and a good performance from the team, helped to put the problems of a difficult week behind us.

New! Chonburi v Muang Thong Utd - Top Five Matches: 2023

5. TPL
Muang Thong Utd 1-5 Chonburi
(Scorers: Amadou (2), Channarong, Danilo, OG)
Thunderdome Stadium
Attendance: 6,913
17th September, 2022

Even though Muang Thong Utd are not the powerhouse they once were, and this match has lost some of its glamour, this was a satisfying tonking of an old rival. And on their own patch too. I only wish I could have been there to see it.
IAHTS

4. League Cup
2nd Round
Chonburi 5-1 Muang Thong Utd
(Scorers: Matheus Alves (3), Nebihi, Saharat)
Chonburi Stadium
Attendance: 4,633
11th July, 2018

Chonburi fans very happy and rightly so. They’d seen their team give their much vaunted opposition a right royal battering and played well.

Muangthong? Well I don't get to see them very often, but if this is it, good heavens! No defensive shape, no commitment, don't close down, and seem to leave everything to the left winger or  Heberty. It was a very poor showing. I can't think that the travelling fans would have been very impressed. Obviously they are not this bad every week, but the Sharks won't mind. A good win in a competition that is opening up for them, as some big names fall.

Great for the fans who put up with so much. Great for the club who need some good will.

3. League Cup
Quarter Final - 1st Leg
Chonburi 3-2 Muang Thong Utd
(Scorers: Gaston, Ney Fabiano, Chonlatit)
Chonburi Stadium
Attendance: n/a
17th August, 2011

Chonburi FC rallied to beat Muang Thong United 3-2 in the first leg of the League Cup quarter finals last night. At Chonburi Stadium, Muang Thong got off to a fast start when they were awarded a penalty after Teerasil Dangda was tripped in the area by Adul Lahso. Datsakorn Thonglao, who returned from suspension, put the Kirins in front.

Inspired by Therdsak Chaiman, who also returned from suspension, the Sharks piled pressure on the visitors and their efforts paid off just before half time. Therdsak's free kick found Gaston Gonzalez who headed the ball past Muang Thong goalkeeper Kawin Thammastachanant.

Chonburi were dominant in the opening stages of the second halfbut it was Muang Thong who regained the lead through Jakkraphan Pornsai in the 69th minute. The Sharks equalised in the 76th minute when Ney Fabiano headed the ball into the net from a Therdsak cross. Chonlatit Jantakam then scored the winner for Chonburi later on.

2. FA Cup Final
Chonburi 2-1 Muang Thong Utd
(Scorers: Therdsak, Pipob)
Supachalasai Stadium
Attendance: 15,300
28th November, 2010

Chonburi, everyone's second favourite Thai team, have won the FA Cup, defeating Thai Premier League champions Muang Thong United 2-1 in the final. Despite their proud traditions and their penchant for young players, Chonburi had failed to win any trophies over the last couple of years. So ending that drought will mean a lot to their fans. I'm sure that they would rather have the opprobrium of rival fans if it meant a bit more silver to be polished.
Antony Sutton

1. TPL
Muang Thong Utd 1-2 Chonburi
(Scorers: Nuril, Suree)
Thunderdome Stadium
Attendance: 17,530
25th December, 2011

I recall the match having a cracking atmosphere and a running battle of very fierce verbal exchanges between our fan base and the MTU fans behind the adjacent goal. Added to that mix was the fact that the esteemed Robbie Fowler was playing at 9 for the home side.

It was undoubted Thai football at its best and the “proper football stadium” (no running track) with the crowd so close, added to the excitement and noise. In all the years since I have not experienced a more atmospheric nor memorable game

The Sharks won 2-1 and as we poured out into the car park to get our breath, have another beer or two - and to have some space after being sandwiched together for nearly two hours - the singing was truly memorable. It appeared we were on a roll and in with a chance of a League & League Cup double.

New! Ten Things You Didn't Know About Lamphun Warriors: 2023

Here are ten things you probably didn't know about our next opponents:

1. Midfielder Mohammed Osman is the cousin of TV presenter, producer and author, Richard Osman.

2. The club is currently banned from playing home games in Lamphun, after an "incident" during the 2021 staff Christmas party.

3. Lamphun Warriors nickname, "The White Cattles" came about by accident. They were originally known as "The White Castles" (which was a tribute to Buriram Utd and makes far more sense), but a local printer made an error when mass producing club merchandise and the moniker was adopted in order to save money on a reprint.

4. Brazilian striker, Bill, has a brother called Ben.

5. Hollywood superstars Ryan Reynolds and Rob McEllhenney seriously considered buying the club before eventually purchasing Wrexham. Their reasoning being that Welsh is easier to learn than Thai. And Wales is closer to Philadelphia - both geographically and culturally.

6. Lamphun is the only town in Thailand that has more 7-11s than people.

7. In spite of all their recent success, Lamphun Warriors have never won an away match.

8. Defender Mika Chunuonsee is the only Welshman who doesn't own any Max Boyce LPs. A criminal offence in his homeland. Which is why he can never return.

9. Coach Alexandre Gama played bass guitar on David Bowie's worldwide hit, 'Let's Dance'.

10. First choice keeper, Nont Muangngam, will miss the last ten matches of the season, as he will be appearing in the Thai TV version of 'Love Island'.

New! Chonburi v Buriram Utd - Top 5 Matches

5. FA Cup Semi Final
Chonburi 2–1 Buriram United
(Scorers: Worachit Kanitsribampen , Junior EldstÃ¥l)
Thammasat Stadium
Attendance: 2,267
7th April, 2021

Chonburi upset the form book and the odds by beating hot favourites Buriram Utd to reach the 2020/21 FA Cup final. Goals from Worachit and Junior Edstal saw the Sharks progress in front of a disappointing crowd at Thammasat Stadium.

4. TPL
Buriram Utd 3-2 Chonburi
(Scorers: Leandro Assumpcao, Rodrigo Vergilio)
i-mobile Stadium
Attendance: 32,600
15th April, 2016

Well I expect most Sharks fans are bitterly disappointed at losing a match with the last effective touch of the game. Hard to take sometimes especially after clawing your way back into the match from two down. Should have been a draw and, if it hadn’t been for Chonburi’s very benevolent defensive attitude of ‘after you, sir’, maybe more.

3. TPL
Chonburi 4-2 Buriram Utd
(Scorers: Kazuto Kushida (2), Thiago Cunha, Fode Diakite)
Chonburi Stadium
Attendance: 8,565
8th September, 2012

Buriram Utd, the defending TPL champions, lost 4-2 at Chonburi yesterday with all goals coming from foreign players. Japanese Kazuto Kushida scored twice to give Chonburi a 2-0 lead at halftime.
Brazilian Thiago Cunha made it 3-0 before Buriram started their rally with two goals from Cameroon's Ekwalla Herman. However, Brazilian Fode Diakite finished off the Thunder Castle after 83 minutes.

2. Kor Royal Cup
Buriram Utd 2-2 Chonburi (3-4 on penalties)
(Scorers: Adul Lahso, Ludovick Takam)
Supachalasai Stadium
Attendance: unknown
11th March, 2012

Former champions Chonburi FC took a psychological win for the start of the new Thai Premier League season when they beat Buriram United on penalties to lift the Thai King’s Trophy – the first silverware of the year. The Sharks fought back from two goals down to draw 2-2 and then won 4-3 on penalties to lift the cup.

New! Lucky Seven: 2022

It has become a running joke in Thai football that Chonburi are always 7th in the TPL standings. So much so, that I predicted we'd finish there in my season preview. New!! My Top Five League Cup Ties: 2022

5. 26/7/17 1st Round: Chiang Mai 2-2 Chonburi (2-4 pens)

A very exciting cup game, played in difficult conditions and with a fantastic atmosphere. Chonburi were fortunate to come away with the win in the end, despite bossing the penalty shoot out. Chiang Mai should take a lot of positives from this despite the disappointing end. It was a great cup tie for the neutral supporter and for the home fans (until the 93rd minute). Chiang Mai have been hoping for these kind of occasions (playing big teams with great atmosphere) for quite a few years now.

Home games in the 2nd leg of this season have all had a great atmosphere and of course until this game, a positive result. This was a bigger game against bigger opposition and so there was a special atmosphere both in terms of the cup and playing Chonburi.

Mark Varney

4. 8/8/18 Quarter Final: Chonburi 4-6 Bangkok Glass (AET)

Someone questioned a few weeks ago why I watch Thai football if I'm so negative about it. This is why. No plastic English PL for me, thank you. With its no limit on foreigners nutty idea, built to bolster Murdoch's bank balance and sod everything else, though people are too stupid to realise it.

No, last night’s match was right up there with the 'Parrot Sketch' and 'Fork 'andles’. From a footballing point of view it highlighted the woeful quality of teams, officials and players on show every week at many grounds, but for the neutral, just pure entertainment. And what a roller coaster.

Peter Reeves

3. 11/7/18 2nd Round: Chonburi 5-1 Muang Thong Utd

2. 17/8/11 Quarter Finals 1st Leg: Chonburi 3-2 Muang Thong Utd

Tor Chittinand

1. 1/10/11 Semi Finals 2nd Leg: Chonburi 3-2 PEA (PEA won on away goals)

In a stormy* match, PEA stunned the hosts after just three minutes when Suchao Nutnum headed the ball home for an early lead.

PEA were leading 2-0 on aggregate as Chonburi needed three unanswered goals to progress.

Guston Silva made it 1-1 on the night in the 25th minute but 60 seconds later, Chonburi were reduced to 10 men when Kenneth Akpueze was dismissed as the referee thought he elbowed Frank Acheampong but replays showed Akpueze did nothing and that Acheampong had feigned injury.

But Chonburi fought spiritedly and Pipob On-mo gave the Sharks a 2-1 lead to then make it 2-2 on aggregate.

In the second half, several players of both sides were booked before, in the 70th minute, Franck Ohandza scored an equaliser for PEA. Pipob made it 3-2 and Ney Fabiano nearly became the hero for the Sharks when his header was saved by goalkeeper Sivaruk Terdsungnern.

Tor Chittinand

Chonburi 3-2 PEA: The Aftermath

*"Stormy" doesn't really cover it. It was a super-charged occasion and the sense of injustice - caused by some very debatable refereeing decisions - spilled over onto the car park following the match. Home fans surrounded the PEA bus and the visitors were locked inside their dressing room for well over ninety minutes after the final whistle.

Emotions were running high and, in the absence of any real security, only the actions of some of the more level headed Chonburi supporters prevented a major incident. However, as there'd also been similar scenes at the league meeting between the two sides a few weeks earlier, we received a heavy fine and had to play our next two home games at neutral venues - the first with none of our fans allowed to attend.

On the pitch, this was one of the best performances I've ever seen from a Chonburi team. The fact it was against all the odds, and we came so close to pulling off an unlikely victory, made it even more impressive. Whilst I'm not condoning what happened outside the stadium, there's no doubt that these events contributed to a remarkable and memorable evening. It's unlikely we'll ever see anything quite like this again. Which is a huge shame.

NEW! Chonburi Five-a-Side Team: 2021

Sinthaweechai Hathairattanakool
Solid, reliable, a desire to win and would fill up those small goals quite well. Also handy if needed as an outfield player if we're looking for a late equaliser.

Anderson Dos Santos
Quick, hard to beat, tough tackling and good going forward. If we're allowing the ball to go over head height, he's useful in the air too.

Michael Byrne (Captain)
Two footed, quick thinking, strong tackler, good vision, has a good shot on him and a "never say die" attitude. An ideal five a side footballer. I've made him my captain.

Therdsak Chaiman
Sheer class. Therdsak oozes quality and his all round game is perfectly suited to five a side. He'd weigh in with more than his fair share of goals and get stuck in when required.

Thiago Cunha
Chonburi's greatest striker. He has fire in his belly and would be a handful for any opponent. There'd be plenty of goals too. He's the ideal front man for my team.

NEW!! Where Are They Now? The 2010 FA Cup Winning Team: 2021

What has happened to the 2010 FA Cup winning team?

18. Sinthaweechai Hathairattanakool
The 39 year old is his second spell with the club. After leaving for Suphanburi at the start of the 2016 season, he rejoined The Sharks three years later. The former Thailand number 1 is currently behind Chanin Sae-Ear in the pecking order at Chonburi and is likely to be on the bench this Sunday.

29. Jetsadakorn Hemdaeng
Buaw started his career at Chonburi and played nearly 200 matches for The Sharks, before moving on at the end of the 2013 season. He spent the next few years bouncing from club to club - mainly in the lower leagues - and was last heard of at Uthai Thani FC.

25. Chonlatit Jantakam
The hard as nails centre back left the club he loves in 2019, after playing over 300 matches for us and being a part of all our fantastic achievements. A true loyal servant and excellent professional, who also won 45 international caps. He spent last year at Songkhla, but don't be surprised if he returns home at some point to take up a coaching role.

6. Suttinun Phukhom
The classy and composed centre back joined us at the start of the 2008 season and immediately became a fan favourite. Sadly, Em's career has been blighted by injury, but stands out as one of the greatest defenders this country has ever produced. He played for relegated Trat during the 2020/21 season and came on as a late substitute for them in the recent 5-1 FA Cup defeat at Chonburi Stadium.

3. Natthaphong Samana
Another Assumption College, SriRacha graduate, Maew returned to his spiritual home in 2007 and was a big part of our glory years. The 36 year old left back was a national team regular during his heyday and always impressed with his tough tackling and overlapping, forward runs. He spent last season with his hometown club, Chiang Mai Utd.

8. Ekaphan Inthasen
An unsung - and modest hero - who came to Chonburi at the start of 2008. Cherry was hugely popular with Sharks fans for his hard working and unfussy approach to the game. He retired a couple of years ago, after spending a his final seasons with Super Power Samut Prakan.

19. Adul Lahsoh
For my money, one of the best players we've ever had at Chonburi. And someone who should still be here. However, the 34 year old midfielder spent last season at Lamphun Warrior, where he's already a firm favourite with the fans. The tough tackling midfielder proved he still has plenty to offer by helping his new team to win the T3 North title.

15. Purithat Jarigarnon
I had high hopes for this lad when he burst into Chonburi's first team during the 2009 season. Sadly, a series of injuries and bad luck put paid to a long and successful career. After leaving us in 2015, the undoubtedly talented midfielder has moved around from club to club and is currently on the books of TPL rivals, Prachuap.

13. Therdsak Chaiman
One of the greatest Thai players to have graced the league and represent the national team. Uncle Therd was already 37 years old when he joined Chonburi in 2009, but over the next 8 seasons, until his eventual retirement, he was consistently our best player and inspiration to those around him. After eventually hanging up his boots, he had a short - largely unsuccessful - spell as The Sharks' head coach. He spent the most recent campaign in charge at Uthai Thani.

7. Arthit Sunthornphit
One of the most talented and skillful Thai players there has ever been. Bas was also a dead ball specialist and scored many of his goals from well taken free kicks. Sadly, I believe the now 34 year old didn't really fulfill his potential, but, on his day, was always a joy to watch. He is now playing for his hometown side, Khon Kaen Utd, and in line for a return to the top flight.

10. Pipob On-Mo
Chonburi - nay, Thai football - legend, Pipob On-Mo finally hung up his boots at the close of the 2018 season. The great man was rewarded with a fantastic testimonial match - which brought tears to the eyes of everyone in the ground that night - and a coaching role at the club. He is currently Sasom's right hand man and (surely) a future Sharks' head coach. We're still waiting for that statue, though!

Substitutes
5. Phanuwat Jinta
A steady and reliable squad player, who featured in pretty much every position - apart from goalkeeper - during his long stint with the club. After being constantly overlooked as first choice central midfielder - his preferred role - Dow moved on at the end of the 2012 season. He spent last year with Prachuap.

9. Jules Yves Stephane Baga
One of our most successful and popular overseas signings. Baga joined the club for our first season in the top flight and over the next couple of years, he scored goals on a regular basis - including an absolute screamer in our historic 3-1 AFC Champions League win against Melbourne Victory. After leaving the Sharks in 2008, he returned for a second, equally productive spell, two years later. He was most recently spotted playing for Eding Sport FC in his native Cameroon.

39. Supasek Kaikeaw
The Ayutthya born striker spent just one season with The Sharks, after signing from Bangkok Utd. Since then, the 34 year old has had more clubs than Tiger Woods. His most recent being Rajpracha in T3 West.

Coach
Jadet Meelarp
The most successful coach in Chonburi's history and someone who is inextricably linked to the club. The popular Sir Ded has had three spells in charge of the Sharks and delivered three major trophies. After being unceremoniously ousted fom Thai Port midway through the 20/21 season, he is enjoying a renaissance as boss at T2 side, Muangkan Utd.
