Khun Obb - a BG Pathum Utd fan - provides our tenth season review.
Despite Buriram United running away with it - I feel this is overall a good year in Thai League 1. I'm particularly happy to see how competitive the relegation is this year.
Which T1 team most impressed you?
I enjoyed watching Chonburi FC in the first leg. Khon Kaen United tried to play some brave football toward the end. But my answer has to be Buriram United.
What has really annoyed you about Thai football this season?
Buriram United won every domestic title (except the Champions Cup if you count that).
What are your overall impressions of your club’s season?
Horrible. Opinions amongst my colleague are that this season is even worse than in 2018 when we got relegated. We were so optimistic at the beginning of the year, and it hurts to see things spiral into disaster.
What did your club get right?
I'm extremely proud of how BG Pathum United hosted the group stage of the 2022 AFC Champions League, and I am proud to say we brought the same high standard to every Thai League matchday at BG Stadium.
And what did they get wrong?
Getting rid of Teguramori, without a replacement in mind, proved to be catastrophic. No disrespect to Matt Smith, he gave his best for the club, but he was just not the right appointment at the right time.
What advice would you give them ahead of next season?
Plan well, work hard, and believe in yourself.
Who have been your best players this season?
Teerasil Dangda carried the goalscoring responsibility but overall Sarach Yooyen is our best and most consistent player.
And who hasn't performed?
As someone who played over 300 J League games, Maruhashi failed to live up to expectations. But to be fair, 2022-23 is a bad year for all our left-backs.
Which players, or type of players, would you like to sign for next season?
I would love for us to sign a quick winger who can beat defenders and have an eye for a killer pass. Channarong Promsikaew would be ideal, but it is unlikely (at the moment).
Which were your team’s best performances this season?
Beating Port FC and Muangthong United at BG Stadium.
And your worst?
Losing away to Ratchaburi FC without a single solid attempt at goal was our lowest point. We were so poor that night that some sections of the VIP home crowd started to comfort the BGPU media staff.
Which was your favourite away trip?
The Champions Cup win in Nakhonratchasima because we beat Buriram United and won something. The AFC Champions League quarter-final in Saitama against the home team Urawa Reds - seeing the wall of red hardcore supporter was surreal. Definitely some of the best fans in Asia.
And your least favourite?
Losing away to Ratchaburi FC without a single solid attempt at goal was our lowest point. We were so poor that night that some sections of the home crowd started to comfort the BGPU away fans.
What was the best thing that happened to you personally whilst supporting your club this season?
Meeting other fans and exchanging how bad our club is. It never gets boring.
Finally, what message would you like to give to your fellow BG Pathum Utd fans and fans of Thai football?
To BGPU fans…let’s just enjoy the joy.
To other Thai football fans…if you have a chance, come visit BG Stadium on your away day. We have good beer.
