Navy 3-1 Chonburi

Match report
by Peter Reeves
This, I am afraid, is 'not damn good enough'. That is what I should think the majority of Sharks fans might be saying heading home after one of the most insipid performances and worst results in my nearly 3 years of watching them.

Are they wrong? Are they being unfair?

If that was all that was said, the team and the club got off lightly.

Navy don't score too many and concede a lot. This should be three needed points for the Sharks to ease a few worries and it didn't start too badly. On 3 minutes, a free kick didn't sail aimlessly over the bar, but forced a save. “That's a first,” I thought. On 5, a header from Marclei went just wide. A little warning on 7, as a lack of defence allowed a Navy break, but the ball was put over and the chance gone.

The next 25 minutes can only be described as dull. Navy incapable of much, Chonburi likewise, but then on 33, the Navy winger was given far too much room and crossed the ball in towards the near post. It was harmless. Chanin only really needed to come off his line to collect, but he was late, dived at it, completely missed it and the Navy forward stood facing an empty net a yard out. Even he couldn't miss that!

It got worse four minutes later, as after a shocking defensive header went backwards, a 'hit and hope' shot was just pushed straight out to an incoming attacker by the hapless. Chanin. 2-0. Ok, fellas, joke over. Shall we try and win now?

At that point Navy should close the game up until half time, but then you forget this is Thailand and they don't know how to do that. Crazy Navy defending brought one goal back. Then they made a very good attempt at making it 2-2, but Chonburi themselves were just as bad. Half time 2-1. Dreadful is the only word to describe it from a neutrals perspective. Disaster if you're a 'Blue'.

Still, half time and the coach can make some changes and get them organised for a second half blitz. Er, no. Sorry, I was forgetting. You need a coach with just a basic understanding of the game to do that,oh, and a few players that give a damn.

The first 10 minutes of the second half got a bit feisty, as Navy, realizing there might be a point here, started making tackles. Chonburi had a lot of possession, but always fragile at the back - of course - and doing nothing to give the impression they wanted to win. Navy were having a go and from winning two 50/50 challenges in midfield, the ball was humped forward. A clumsy challenge and down goes the Navy attacker . Penalty. A bit harsh maybe. Put away, 3-1.

Surely someone will recognize this has gone on long enough. No. Navy now believing and fighting for everything. Chonburi wandering around in a daze. At the final whistle there were a few 'handbags', but a loss, an awful loss.

A team with no character and far too many freeloaders, resting their hopes on a little more than average Worachit.

So, how do you sum that up?

The players: Devoid of character or responsibility and look like they turn up to get paid. Most don't seem to care, especially the foreign contingent.

The coach: Well he isn't, is he? He’s just someone that picks the team ( or maybe he doesn't)

The fans: Brilliant as always, even if the numbers are dwindling. Don't the club realise there is a base to start some serious repair work with them?

Management: Not even worth discussing. There isn't any and please don't hang that  'we're relying on our youth programme for the future' nonsense. There isn't a hope in hell that'll work, unless someone recognizes you need to know how to do it. And, guess what? It's not the 'Thai way', as we can see by what has been produced for the “all-conquering” national team over the years.

The reality is, the national champions of a few years ago are in trouble. That was the second worst team performance I've seen this season, the other being Nakhon Ratchasima, when the Sharks got a win there.

Given that the bottom 3 may already be down, that leaves 2 places ( unless the rules change). Bangkok Glass and Pattaya Utd are capable of winning a few, Chainat don’t look so bad and Police Tero, and a couple of others, are finding points. It could be Chonburi, Swatcat and Sukhothai fighting to avoid one of the last 2 places.

Chonburi FC should not be one of those three, but at the moment they deserve to be.

This is just 'not damn good enough'

New! Season Review No11 - Chonburi FC: 2023

For our 11th season review, we turn the spotlight on Chonburi FC. Here's Tim Spear with his opinions on the 2022/23 campaign.

What are your overall impressions of Chonburi’s season?
A season of two halves. A good first half. A woeful second half. It was nice to see Adul back at the club. I know it was only a temporary appointment, but to be honest, it was really good to have him in charge. And I did want him to stay. Whether he’ll turn out to be a good coach or not, it's hard to say, but there was a little improvement in the way the team played so I was quite pleased about that.

What did we get right and wrong on the field?
During the first leg we were playing a fluid style of football, with a lot of width. Channarong had a free role and he was playing well. After the Christmas break, you could see he wanted to go off and run the game from up the field, but he was moved much deeper. This meant that we, as a team, just became slow and predictable, meaning we got annihilated left, right and centre. We lost that sense of urgency so I think we definitely got that wrong.

And off the field?
Everything surrounding the drunk driving tragedy. The management handled it very badly. Worawut was the best goalkeeper we had, and certainly looked a very good prospect, but that isn't really the issue. The issue is the ongoing drinking culture at the club and what it has lead to. Initially, the club dealt with it appallingly. Then they seemed to make amends and got things right. However, certain people who were involved were allowed back at the club, which is fundamentally wrong. We shouldn't have a drinking culture at the club, nor people who encourage that with young footballers. It destroys their careers and it destroys the chance for my club to do as well as they can do.

What advice would you give our management ahead of next season?
I know I sound like a stuck record, but get rid of the drinking culture. That's the most important thing they need to do.

On the field, let's hope they can give the new manager some support. My fear is that we will make the same mistakes as the last time we had a Japanese coach. Wada had no support. And I wonder why? There does seem to be something in the club that is antagonistic towards foreigners and it's been about for a long time. We shouldn't be in a position where a manager of ours is publicly criticising foreign players, like Sasom did last season. His outburst should have been dealt with at a higher level, but it was just swept under the carpet and ignored. That was appalling.

Which players, or type of players, would you like us to sign next season?
I think we need a spine of solid players. We need to find a couple of good central defenders, a large player in midfield and we need a goalkeeper who is more than one metre fifty in height. The latter is essential. You’re not going to win games with a goalkeeper who is small.

Which was our best performance this season?
We were magnificent early on. However, I can't really remember any specific matches because it was such a long time ago now!!

And our worst?
There is a plethora of worst games. You could almost select any game since Christmas. We were just woeful at times. We kept giving the ball away! And the manager playing the foreign players out of position really didn't help.

Which was your favourite away trip?
I didn’t get to many this year, but usually my favourite away trip is BG Pathum Utd. Which I sadly didn't make this time around. However, I really enjoyed Port. It’s a nice away ground. Good support and a lot of noise from both sets of fans. But it was hot!

And your least favourite?
Where do I really hate going? It’s hard to say. I like going to all the away games, to be honest. They're all different.

What was the best thing that happened to you personally whilst supporting Chonburi this season?
I think meeting you, Dale. Seeing you back at Chonburi was a highlight. (Thank you, Tim. The feeling is mutual - ed). Also, seeing other fans away from home, and bumping into people that you don't always expect to see and haven't seen for many years.

What are your impressions of the league overall this year?
Obviously Buriram Utd were head and shoulders above the rest and ran away with it, but that’s what you’d expect, given the how professional they are and how well they are run. The rest of league has been fairly competitive. It seemed to be a pretty level playing field, with some teams slightly better than others. The teams I have seen play against Chonburi have been pretty evenly matched. It was also nice to see some new teams in the TPL, even though they struggled near the bottom.

Which T1 teams most impressed you?
It's really hard to say because when I’m watching a game of football, I’m concentrating on Chonburi. I don't care about the opposition. I have no interest in how they are playing. I just want Chonburi to win. Some teams do come and play very well, but I haven't seen everyone this season; for instance, I didn’t see Buriram Utd play this year. However, I did see Muang Thong Utd and I thought they were woeful. BG Pathum Utd were very good, so I would say out of all the visiting teams I have watched at Chonburi Stadium, they were the most impressive.

Away from home, I thought Port played exceptionally well against us. We played pretty well in the first half, but after the break they completely overran us. They have this really talented attacking midfielder. I don’t know his name; Wora something or other? He looks like one for the future. I wouldn’t mind him in our team. He might be expensive though.

What has really annoyed you about Thai football this season?
What has really annoyed me about Thai football this season? Easy. VAR. Referees, linesmen and VAR. It is unbelievable. This is just going to be a rant now! For every decision, they stop the game for about ten minutes. Even when it’s for something obvious that the linesman should have seen. If it's obvious, it should take a matter of seconds to reach a decision. If it's not obvious, OK. But it still shouldn’t be taking that long. And what are the linesmen doing?! God knows what they're doing! They’re just waddling up and down the touchline. They may as well give them a guide dog and get it to follow the action. For me, they are a waste of time. As you can tell, this really annoys me! But I’m sure everyone else feels the same.

Finally, what message would you like to give to your fellow Chonburi fans and fans of Thai football?
To Chonburi fans; we love you. We love you all. To fans of Thai football, the same message; we love you. We love you all.

I think to compare Thai football with football from other countries is really wrong because there are so many different factors influencing the game here. When you come here and watch Thai football, you should enjoy it for what it is, and relish the experience. The fan experience is unique. I love the way that both sets of fans mingle before and after the game. It's very friendly, and if there is any banter, it's very light hearted. And that's what I like about about being here. I love going to away matches, chatting to people and finding out where the the local beer is or the food.

At times the football is very good and at other times, it's not. I think people sometimes forget about the heat in which matches are played and the fatigue this causes. When everyone from Europe complained about the high temperatures in Qatar for the World Cup, I was complaining it was too cold! The temperatures were 22 degrees centigrade, and our players are regularly playing in 32 degrees centigrade - and above. There's a big difference. I think this needs to be taken into consideration and we should have some sympathy for the Thai teams.

I like the way that Thai teams are generally pretty sporting, like kicking the ball out when an opposition player is down. I'm sorry, Dale, I know you hate that. (I do! -ed). I’m not that keen on it when it happens in England, but here it's just the way that they do it and I think you get used to that.

Therefore, in summary, enjoy Thai football for what it is and make the most of it while you're here.

Hopefully, I’ll get to meet many of you when you come to Chonburi in the future. If you do come, please visit us in the sala and we will always make you feel very welcome.

New! Season Review No10 - BG Pathum Utd: 2023

Khun Obb - a BG Pathum Utd fan - provides our tenth season review.

What are your impressions of the league overall this year?
Despite Buriram United running away with it - I feel this is overall a good year in Thai League 1. I'm particularly happy to see how competitive the relegation is this year.

Which T1 team most impressed you?
I enjoyed watching Chonburi FC in the first leg. Khon Kaen United tried to play some brave football toward the end. But my answer has to be Buriram United.

What has really annoyed you about Thai football this season?
Buriram United won every domestic title (except the Champions Cup if you count that).

What are your overall impressions of your club’s season?
Horrible. Opinions amongst my colleague are that this season is even worse than in 2018 when we got relegated. We were so optimistic at the beginning of the year, and it hurts to see things spiral into disaster.

What did your club get right?
I'm extremely proud of how BG Pathum United hosted the group stage of the 2022 AFC Champions League, and I am proud to say we brought the same high standard to every Thai League matchday at BG Stadium.

And what did they get wrong?
Getting rid of Teguramori, without a replacement in mind, proved to be catastrophic. No disrespect to Matt Smith, he gave his best for the club, but he was just not the right appointment at the right time.

What advice would you give them ahead of next season?
Plan well, work hard, and believe in yourself.

Who have been your best players this season?
Teerasil Dangda carried the goalscoring responsibility but overall Sarach Yooyen is our best and most consistent player.

And who hasn't performed?
As someone who played over 300 J League games, Maruhashi failed to live up to expectations. But to be fair, 2022-23 is a bad year for all our left-backs.

Which players, or type of players, would you like to sign for next season?
I would love for us to sign a quick winger who can beat defenders and have an eye for a killer pass. Channarong Promsikaew would be ideal, but it is unlikely (at the moment).

Which were your team’s best performances this season?
Beating Port FC and Muangthong United at BG Stadium.

And your worst?
Losing away to Ratchaburi FC without a single solid attempt at goal was our lowest point. We were so poor that night that some sections of the VIP home crowd started to comfort the BGPU media staff.

Which was your favourite away trip?
The Champions Cup win in Nakhonratchasima because we beat Buriram United and won something. The AFC Champions League quarter-final in Saitama against the home team Urawa Reds - seeing the wall of red hardcore supporter was surreal. Definitely some of the best fans in Asia.

And your least favourite?
Losing away to Ratchaburi FC without a single solid attempt at goal was our lowest point. We were so poor that night that some sections of the home crowd started to comfort the BGPU away fans.

What was the best thing that happened to you personally whilst supporting your club this season?
Meeting other fans and exchanging how bad our club is. It never gets boring.

Finally, what message would you like to give to your fellow BG Pathum Utd fans and fans of Thai football?
To BGPU fans…let’s just enjoy the joy.

To other Thai football fans…if you have a chance, come visit BG Stadium on your away day. We have good beer.

New! Season Review No9 - Port: 2023

Our ninth season review comes from Port fan, Jim Clarke.

What are your overall impressions of your club’s season?
Genuinely pleasantly surprised. We went into the season with fairly low expectations. The hope was for a season of transition under a new manager who would be given time. Obviously being Port that didn’t happen and we had our normal numerous managerial changes. What we’ve ended up with as a set up seems to be moving in the right direction. However, this club is never more than a couple of poor results away from a sacking and some more chaos.

Third and a place in the ACL play offs was very pleasing and entirely unexpected, although to be realistic we were the plodding horse of the league who just kept going all season being slightly better than the majority. We didn’t so much win third as have it handed to us thanks to numerous  teams who had gone well in the first leg, deciding to spend the majority of the second leg barely collecting a point. Then at the back end, as soon as it seemed in their grasp, Muangthong had a mini implosion combined with Port managing a win at Buriram to get us over the line. Which was obviously very enjoyable.

What did you club get right on and off the field?
The signing of an actual goal scoring striker was pleasing and Hamilton delivered. There was a general improvement of signings, as people seem to arrive for what they offer on the field rather than off it. While a few of the squad padding, why is he here, types are moving on. The cheap tickets, 50 baht to get in the cheap (remnants of) seats and 100baht for the prawn sandwich loving, rain dodgers is superb value. The introduction of something that’s almost an online ticketing system. It should be considerably better but any improvement is welcome. That white away kit.

And what did they get wrong?
The normal, too many managerial changes, Cooper really should have been given more time. The interference with selections and tactics by those who shouldn’t be involved with that side of the club. The lack of a modern online ticketing system, progress is great but its 2023. Not signing Dolah up to a new contract. Finally we find an actual leader to wear the armband, a Thai international, who gets the club and local community and we let him walk away from the club. Considering the money that flows out the club to bit part players, there’s no excuse for not making him an acceptable offer and the chances of a Thai replacement of similar ability are near zero. The absolute mess of a home kit.

What advice would you give them ahead of next season?
Same as every year, leave the football to football people and give them time. Sign people for their football only. Only coaches and players on the bench.

Who has been your best performing player this season?
There hasn’t been a clear stand out performer this season. Hamilton was signed to score goals and delivered. The emergence of Teerasak was great  and hopefully can continue next season. Somporn arrived from the place we really shouldn’t shop and whilst a step up, didn’t strike me as big enough one to justify the move, then set about displaying just how much better than my expectations he is but having only played half a season for the righteous side of Bangkok, can’t take the prize. Same goes for Worachit, a scorer of some important goals and a midfielder to put smiles on faces on his day.

Negueba has great chaos energy, scored some great goals and plays with a level of passion fans love to see, anyone one who chooses to blast the ball at the Muangthong bench, as a Thai ref has one of their game swinging moments against us, is alright. Putros no idea how we found him but the guys as solid as a rock in defence or midfield, doing the shovel work that will go unnoticed to a wider audience. However, I’m going to go for Suphanan, right back has taken the player of the year regular in recent season at The Pat and having arrived seemingly as a longterm understudy to Roller. He took his opportunity putting in the whole hearted efforts weekly.

And your worst?
Sorry Chonburi fans but its Ben Davis. The guy never looked interested and seemed to feel entitled to a starting place. I honestly don’t know how much ability he has, there must be some to have at one point been on the books of Fulham and if you can get him to put a shift in maybe there is a player in there, we just never saw anything like one in a Port shirt.

Which players, or type of players, would you like to sign for next season?
We’ve had a massive clear out at centre back. We’ve brought in Charlie Clough from Korat but that still leaves us light, ideally, we can go out and find someone big scary, able to play a bit and skilled in the dark arts, the kinda guy that makes Tunez and Victor look like school prefects. A striking alternative to Hamilton, there seems to be an unwillingness to let Teerasak lead the line so on occasions Hamilton has stayed on the pitch when he’s no longer involved in the game.

Which was your teams best performance this season?
Winning away at Buriram, seems the obvious answer, the meeting of Thailand's big two in the league is a massive game and despite having nothing to play for, the countryside folk came out in numbers to see Port and registered the leagues highest attendance of the season, only to be sent home disappointed.

Wins at home v BG at a time it felt the season was drifting into nothingness and away at Bangkok United not just because its always nice to beat that terrible mob, it was a decent performance and away fixtures against the top two netting six points is massive progress on recently years.

And your worst?
Samut Songkhram away in the league cup. There’s being on the end of a cup shock and then there’s as poor a showing as you’ll see, devoid of ideas and really didn’t look like there was a whole heap of passion out there.

Which was your favourite away trip?
Its seldom the football that make a good away day in this league. Two that stand out in ground were the back and forth with a few Buriram fans from their non plastic minority at the FA Cup semi final in Ratchaburi (love ya, Tuggy) and the gallows humour of those of us at the Samut Songkhram match.

And your least favourite?
Prachuap away. On the field wasn’t great, it was very clear their last minute equalizer was coming. For once rather than spend a night down there, l was in and out on matchday. Then the day before l sprained my ankle and really wasn’t in much of a state to be getting about, so spend the entire event in pain with one working leg. All rounded off with a two hour train delay getting home. Thankfully we get the chance to go back and do Prachuap better next season.

What was the best thing that happened to you personally whilst supporting your club this season?
The last few games of the season the atmosphere around and in the ground at Port felt back to pre COVID levels. Theres a fair few friends l only see at Port now so its always good to catch with them.

What are your impressions of the league overall this year?
Slightly worrying the standard in general has fallen. The TV situation is an on going mess that is part of a spiralling issue with interest and attendances at best stagnating and seeming to fall. There are massive issues that need addressing but those who should be doing that prefer to congratulate themselves on their “success”. All of which means what in world terms is a very mediocre set up at Buriram, is lauded for being ground breaking. And well done to them on being the tallest dwarf in a land of wasted football potential but if the set up and Thailand’s talent pool is that good, combined with the budget, they’d be a major force in continental football. There is no reason much of what they do shouldn’t be repeated or exceeded across the country numerous times, even without the budget. Aim higher Thai football.

I’ve come to accept that the likelihood of major change is unlikely. Despite all that’s wrong with the league it remains a good day out meeting likeminded football people and opportunity to get out and explore the country.

Which T1 team other than your own- most impressed you?
The obvious answer to this one would be Ratchaburi, preseason l concluded they’d weakened themselves to the point of tipping them for relegation. They more than showed me up with a very decent season. However, I’m going to go for Police. They’ve quietly become a very solid set up, that goes about their business with very little drama and regularly produce decent results.

What has really annoyed you about Thai football season?
The willingness to move the league dates and fixtures for any minor age group international event or similar will never cease to amaze me. Along with the failure to get fixtures out early and then not move them. Peaking with moving league games to play friendlies again J league clubs on a postseason jolly. If the clubs and FA show so little respect for the league and its fixtures, you can hardly be shocked that the public have similar distain.

Do you have a message to other fans of Thai football?
I suspect anyone who reads this is far enough into their Thai football experience to know not to take it all very seriously. I fear there are darker days to come for the league but equally there will always be football in some form out there. Enjoy and hopefully see some of you next season.

Generally, refs aren’t bent and especially not against your team rather they’re just not very good.

New! Season Review No8 - Bangkok Utd: 2023

Next up is Bangkok Utd fan, Matt Jenkins, with his views on the 2022/23 season.

What are your overall impressions of your club’s season?
Being a Chelsea fan back home, BUFC has been a welcome distraction this season. I think if you had said at the beginning of the season second place and an FA Cup final, I’d have taken it. But the season petered out for me in March. I’m not sure why I’m so deflated, but the FA Cup final last night felt like we were just happy to be there. That was a very winnable game for us, having beaten them earlier in the season, but it felt like our season had already ended. It was really good to see a semi full Thammasat last night, I would be going a lot more if it was like that every home game. I went to more away games than home this season.

Taking the positives though, Totchawan seems to have got us well drilled. Discipline seems to be improving (which gives the Sandpit less to talk about), and he has not been afraid to drop the superstars. I’m excited for next season, but we will need to make some impactful signings. We're screaming out for a new creative midfielder.

What did your club get right on and off the field?
Not having our mid season wobble to the same level as other seasons

And what did they get wrong?
Losing to Port at home, and not battering them when we played them away.

What advice would you give them ahead of next season?
The steps we made forward this year were good. We need to tinker but not rebuild.

Who have been your best players this season?
For me, when he's played, Mahmoud Eid has looked superb. He puts a proper shift in. Tossawat and Thitpan have bonded well in midfield, and I hope we can get Wisarut back fully fit after his big injury.
Willen Mota has looked like he can also supply some goals, but we're desperate for a big solid number 9.

And who hasn't performed?
I hate calling players out here, as everyone has put in a shift, but if I was asking for an extra 10% from players this season it would have been Vander Luis. I feel both he and Heberty may be going.

Which players, or type of players, would you like to sign for next season?
An out and out striker , (might be able to get Bolongi on the cheap now – but fear he won't enjoy the physio sessions after that punch) and a pacy winger. I really liked Wokiang at Kho Kaen Utd. I thought he was a lively before going off. His stats weren’t great, but he was one of the better players I’ve seen this season. Pipe dream would be Dolah paired with Everton, after leaving Port, but his future looks set abroad.

Which was your team’s best performance this season?
4-3 vs Buriram Utd.

And your worst?
Battering Prachuap and losing 2-1

Which was your favourite away trip?
Nongbua Pichaya and Khon Kaen Utd. Neither ground was spectacular, but the trips are always fun.
Port is always a good atmosphere, and being home in 10 mins is a bonus. Always a delight seeing that woman come out of the dug out and start dishing out instructions.

And your least favourite?
None. What I will add is Lamphun, Ratchaburi, Chiangrai, and Chonburi are all on the list for next season's away days.

What was the best thing that happened to you personally whilst supporting your club this season?
BUFC Hardcore are always kind with the pre game beers at away games. Simple stuff. I admire that group so much. They're at every ground, 7,8,10 hour journies, always a smile and a chat.

Which T1 team most impressed you?
Very difficult to look past the strength of Buriram. Winning everything is what they do, and wrapping up the title in March was impressive. Lamphun's resurgence towards the end of season was also very decent. They looked doomed for a while, but strung some excellent results together, I’m looking forward to that as an away trip next season. If they can get back to their ground.

What has really annoyed you about Thai football this season?
Same old stuff as every season; lack of info, moving games at will, VAR, discipline. Aside from VAR, which everyone seems to be struggling with, the rest isn’t difficult to fix.

Finally, what message would you like to give to your fellow Bangkok Utd fans and fans of Thai football?
Things will never change… it's frustrating, but it's never more than 200bht wasted. And sometimes it delivers above expectation.

Match Report
What a shambles! There's really no other way to describe it. We were outfought, outplayed, outmanoeuvred, outthought, outmuscled and, yes, outclassed last night. I can take being beaten by a better side, which Buriram United certainly are, but I can't accept such a lily-livered performance from a team that thinks it can genuinely mount a title challenge. Anyone with no prior knowledge of the TPL would think we were in the bottom three and not the top three on the strength of this performance. Astonishingly, there was no passion and no spirit from our lot (Pipob aside, in patches) and that is totally unacceptable. They just didn't look interested and I got the feeling that they thought they were beaten before they even stepped out onto the pitch. You could see it in the players' body language.

The two coaches must also take their share of the blame for what we had to endure. What were our tactics? Did we even have any? Look frightened and don't get too close to anyone in a white shirt? Well, that's what it looked like to me. I'm still hoarse this evening from shouting for us to get stuck in. Even when we had possession, we were constantly hitting hopeful (hopeless?) long balls. Did we ever string together more than three or four passes? I can't remember us doing so.

The team selection too was questionable. There were recalls for Chonlatit and dos Santos, neither of whom had featured in weeks. Why? Why would you bring two defenders who are lacking in match fitness (and play one of them out of position) to face the most potent attack in the country, in the biggest game of the season? The Buriram forwards must have thought that all their birthdays and other present giving celebrations had come at once.

Also, it's in games like this that you realise why I'm not such a big fan of Kushida. He goes missing, when he should be asserting himself and proving to us non believers that he is the player certain sections of the Thai media like to tell us he is. I can't remember one positive contribution he made in this match. Not one. And that, for me, speaks volumes.

Even the usually hard working Adul was anonymous last night. I've never seen him hide like that before. You can usually rely on him to put himself about but yesterday, he looked like he'd rather be sitting at home with his feet up watching the tele. In fact, that's where I wish I'd been.

And as for Thiago. Well, we got all of the bad and none of the good. He is a prodigious talent but he is one of the most frustrating footballers I've ever seen. I know I'm repeating myself but I wish someone would take him to one side and tell him a few home truths. He might not like it but he'd be a much better player for it. I can think of a couple of TPL coaches who wouldn't tolerate his nonsense, no matter how many goals he was scoring.

So, where do we go from here? "To Chiang Rai", I hear you cry. And you are right. Therefore, one consolation is that we do have the chance to quickly regain some pride, against of the weaker teams in what - top two aside - is proving to be a very poor league. Anything less than three points on Sunday is not an option. There did appear to be a lot of dissatisfied fans inside, and outside, the stadium yesterday. And many of them have finally realised we are not the force we were a couple of years ago. Lose a couple more games and show the complete lack of effort that went into this performance and I can see our gates, and our on field fortunes plummeting over the rest of the campaign.

New! Season Review No7 - Chiang Rai Utd: 2023

Chiang Rai Utd fan, Alec Peeples, shares his thoughts on the 2022/23 season.

What are your overall impressions of your club’s season?
5th in the table is very flattering. We never looked great nor did we ever play great football. We lost just about every match against ‘better’ teams and ground out results against ‘lesser’ teams. A very forgettable season with poor tactics and overall poor football (for the viewer).

What did your club get right on and off the field?
I don’t thing we got much right to be honest. We did get plenty wrong. I could list my issues with what we did on the field all day but in short we just played a dreadful pragmatic style of football that was not at all entertaining. Our management often looked to be in over their heads and were severely outcoached.

And what did they get wrong?
Off the field we lost our 2 president/chairmen figures (who can really keep up with actual titles in Thai football?) both to politics.

What advice would you give them ahead of next season?
My main advice is to hire a proper coaching staff and for Miti to stop making all the decisions. His approach to football hasn’t shown any progress or promising results over the past few years. It’s insipid and boring. Stop signing a new striker every 6 months and realize the problem isn’t with one individual… it’s with the entire system we play.

Who have been your best players this season?
The best player has to be Victor Cardozo. Always a rock in the backline, leading scorer, and by far the best leader in the squad. I was also pleasantly surprised by our other centre back, Diego Landis. Settasit had a great start and seemed to be an exciting prospect but calmed down over the second half of the season. Still have a lot of hope for his development.

And who hasn't performed?
For underperformers I could list a few... I expected Felipe to have a great season and was mostly let down. He still seems to lack the finishing we need from an attacker. Also Bonilla never really got off the mark. Sivakorn also never seemed to be at his best and looked to be checked out for most the season.

Which players, or type of players, would you like to sign for next season?
We are due to clean house. So many players in our squad seem to have no passion for playing, at least for our team. I’d like to see us bring in some young players that are willing to give more of a fight than we saw last season. I’d also like to see us bring in players that can perform in a new tactical system.

Which was your team’s best performance this season?
I could click through all our results and try to find a good one… but I feel that defeats the point. A best performance should be immediately memorable and nothing is coming to mind.

And your worst?
Worst performance? There were quite a few drubbings we took at home that were pretty painful. I left more matches early this season than in all the previous seasons combined.

Which was your favourite and least favourite away trip?
I was quite busy this year and didn’t make any away trips except to Chiang Mai. So that would have to be the best and the worst.

What was the best thing that happened to you personally whilst supporting your club this season?
The best thing? Not much. I did get kicked (literally kicked from behind) by a fan that was offended when I booed Miti after a particularly bad match. Perhaps I had just a few too many beers that evening…

What are your impressions of the league overall this year?
Quite a boring season and no real surprises. I felt the quality of play was pretty bland as well and I just couldn’t get super excited about the product each and every week

Which T1 team most impressed you?
Has to be Buriram. They just came out firing and never faltered. It feels like we’re back to the Thai league of old after just a bit of parity over the past several seasons.

What has really annoyed you about Thai football this season?
The refereeing has never been great but this year it seemed to be even worse than usual. So much so that it’s probably the one thing that killed my interest and motivation to follow as closely as I have in past years.

Finally, what message would you like to give to your fellow Chiang Rai Utd fans and fans of Thai football?
It feels to me that Thai football is in quite a slump at the moment. The on field product is dull. We are back to being a one team league. The refereeing is offensively bad. And attendance has been lackluster. All of this is only going to change if fans get behind the league, show their support and make their opinions heard. Several club owners are, in my opinion, killing the league by treating the teams as their vanity projects. Obviously this is nothing new and the “owner as the face of the club” conversation has been had hundreds of times. But for me it’s just gotten to be too much. Without big changes I personally won’t be able to keep much interest in the league for long. I don’t want to support a rich guy or girl playing hero… I want to support a club.

New! Season Review No6 - Sukhothai: 2023

Sukhothai FC supporter, Bill Greaves, gives us his opinions on the season just finished.

What are your overall impressions of your club’s season?
Our high scoring team from the second division died, went to heaven and left a sorry mess that had no idea where the opposing goal mouth was. We MUST learn how to score goals. Getting Baggio back was our best move off the field followed closely by getting Bonilla back (I hope that that is true)
I was sorry to lose Dennis Amato but, in hindsight, Coach Laksana was more than up to the task of coaching the team.

What did your club get right and wrong on and off the field?
On the field we scraped by and we have to do better next season. Off the field we seem to be incredibly successful in the free transfer market. Yes, we have made some meteoric blunders but, all in all, someone, somewhere is doing something right. Keep it up.

What advice would you give them ahead of next season?
Interim coach Laksana, told the players to get out there play football and enjoy doing it. My advice is to follow the coach’s instructions.

Who have been your best players this season?
Baggio is always consistently great. Goalie Kittipun (and not just because he gave me his shirt), captain Sila and defender Solda were also consistent. My personal favourite was #6 Jakkit, who is listed as a defender but set up many of our few goals.

And who hasn't performed?
Kenshiro Daniels, but they never let him play. I liked him and am sorry to see him go. Supravee from Ratchaburi often showed potential but not much more. Max suffered cruel injuries and had a horrible year but I am hoping that next season Max will bloom (injury free) and dominate the mid-field as I know he can.

Which players, or type of players, would you like to sign for next season?
For years I have been wanting a big, ugly, angry defender. I think I will stick with that.

Which was your team’s best performance this season?
The 3–0 home win against Chiang Rai.

And your worst?
Home and away losses to Lamphun and/or Prachuap.

Which was your favourite away trip?
Was it the glorious win at Bangkok Glass or was it singing and dancing through the pouring rain during our loss to Muangtong?

And your least favourite?
Prachuap. We were not going to be relegated and no-one gave a damn. The food on the beach was incredible. Everything else was awful.

What was the best thing that happened to you personally whilst supporting your club this season?
Got my picture taken with a Euro Custard Cake girl at Buriram.

What are your impressions of the league overall this year?
A good season, attendance was up, I think. I attended every league game. A lot of good exciting games. Yes there is a big difference between the top and the bottom of the league but, still, anyone can beat anyone on any given day.

Which T1 team most impressed you?
Nong Bua. After the horrors that afflicted Nong Bua this year I have to say that. They played well and had good supporters. In a perfect world, I would get to travel to Nong Bua and Sisaket every season.

What has really annoyed you about Thai football this season?
Opposition supporters who jump up and down, cheer and laugh when they defeat the Firebats. Let’s have some respect.

Finally, what message would you like to give to fans of Thai football?
Two messages;
1 check out the commercial for the Revo Thai League. How many commercial messages do you like to watch? I have watched and enjoyed the Revo Thai League commercial on Youtube many times.

2 remember, you are a supporter not a fan. I can’t watch a game and not support one team or the other. Fans are overweight prawn sandwich guzzling oafs who only want to be seen.

New! Season Review No5 - Muang Thong Utd: 2023

Our fifth season Review features Muang Thong Utd fan, Grant Aitken. Take it away, Grant.

What are your overall impressions of your club’s season?
We started poorly and finished strongly. It’s a shame there weren’t an extra 10 fixtures in the season. Mario had just perfected a winning formula as the tail end of the season approached. We lost 2 out of our last 3 games, but largely because key players were omitted which the board had already decided wouldn’t be at the club the next season. It appeared the same thing happened at Chonburi amongst other clubs too. It’s a curious stance. The players are professionals, I’m not sure why they are not trusted until all league fixtures have been completed. The last few matches end up being somewhat of a washout as a result.

What did your club get right on and off the field?
I have been critical of our sporting director in the past. On reflection he had to make a few no-win decisions on behalf of the ownership and took the brunt of fans’ criticism in his stride. Since SCG deserted the club and left them in a tight spot, he has helped to build the club up with two top 4 finishes. I have no idea how he managed to persuade BG to part with Jaroensak in exchange for our 3rd choice striker and a left back that had come under much scrutiny from fans. I wouldn’t be surprised if he even left discussions with the shirts off the backs from a few of their executives as well. We’re gradually building a decent squad composed of a few crude additions and several academy lads. I'm looking forward to seeing what players are brought in during the offseason.

And what did they get wrong?
Leg 1 was a struggle. I think they could have been braver in the squad selection at the start of the season. Kakana’s potential has been there for all to see since his performances at U16 level for Thailand. He’s already leap frogged several 1st team players in a short space of time, but Mario himself admitted he took some convincing from the sporting director to give him a chance. On that note, Jirawat Janpong and Sarayuth Yooseubuchuea were excellent on loan at T2 level the season before. They possess significantly more natural ability than first team squad players such as Bontawee and Teeraphol. There comes a point in which you need to pull the trigger on young players before they stagnate on endless unsettling loan deals. Neither of the players I mentioned previously have had outstanding seasons, due to injuries and loss of form and I think out hesitation has halted their progess.

What advice would you give them ahead of next season?
In fairness, they seem to be getting a lot of things correct. The players look settled and motivated, and you can’t underestimate the psychological aspect of the game. Mario does a wonderful job in that regard. I know for a fact that many players will take less money to come and play for us. They need to keep harnessing that spirit that had been lacking previously.

Who have been your best players this season?
William Popp. What a player! Score a goal a game from midfield, will pass if there is a better position and tracks back. If there is a better player in the league, then I’m sorry, but I completely missed them! Special mentions to Wheerathep and Patiwat, both of whom excellent in the second half of the season, whereas Picha is Mr.Consistent. He’s adored by Muangthong fans.

And who hasn't performed?
Henri Anier isn’t the striker we need, his lack of mobility saw him fall well down the pecking order. Similarly, Sardor Mirzaev has seemingly regressed. Whilst Eric Johanna is a goal threat, his first touch is appalling. There are rumors that we will replace all the foreign contingent barring Popp, and to be honest, I’d welcome that.

Which players, or type of players, would you like to sign for next season?
There are rumors that former Chonburi favorite, Lukian, will return to Thailand. I’d love to see us in the running for his signature. If not him, a striker in the same mold that pressures the channels, chases lost causes and is a general pain in the arse for central defenders would be welcomed. There have also been tentative links to ASEAN left back and St Gallen defender, Micheal Kempter. That would be a huge addition if we could lure a player of that level. We need a solid center half to replace Rocha, and equally, if there is any chance we can retain Patiwat’s services in goal I’d see that as an essential transfer.

Which was your team’s best performance this season?
The first half against Buriram at home was pleasing, but we rather ruined that so I’d have to opt for beating Ratchaburi 4-0 in the last game of the season. We are a fine watch when we’re in the mood, free flowing football, creating chances from open play. None of that, pass it to the left back and see if he can hit one of the big strikers bollocks!

And your worst?
I think you know this one, Dale…

Which was your favourite away trip?
I changed jobs this year and had other priorities, so unfortunately haven’t ventured outside Nonthaburi this year. I’ll put that right next season, however. I’d love to make Buriram, Ratchaburi or Chiang Rai.

What was the best thing that happened to you personally whilst supporting your club this season?
Last match of the season, just as soon as the match commissioner is out of sight, the club invites the fans to storm the pitch and meet the players. It was priceless to see my son’s face as he posed for pictures and got autographs with his heroes. Stood next to him side by side on the penalty spot as a shirtless William Popp murders the club anthem via megaphone, arm in arm with loyal fans as a few flares get lit up was a great moment to share. How do more locals not buy into this??

What are your impressions of the league overall this year?
It would have been nice to have been more competitive but overall we need to count our blessings. It was nice to have a disruption free season, in which I wasn't faffing around before kick off looking for vaccine certificates or obliged to wear a mask in 38 degree weather.

Which T1 team most impressed you?
Most opposition fared better against us in the first leg than in leg 2. Chiang Rai United did the double against us, so I’d have to give them credit for that.

What has really annoyed you about Thai football this season?
Given that it has been an election year, the reminder that Thai football and Thai politics are so tightly intertwined is frustrating. Time for stricter controls on club owners and a firm separation between the two entities.

Finally, what message would you like to give to your fellow Muang Thong Utd fans and fans of Thai football?
Keep the faith and promote the game as much as possible. For every 9 football fans that turn their nose up at the prospect of attending a football match that isn’t of “European standards,” you’ll eventually find that one person you bring along who adores the game out here, warts and all!

New! Season Review No4 - Buriram Utd: 2023

Jamie Pinder, representing Buriram Utd, is next up with his views on the recently concluded season.

What are your overall impressions of your club’s season?
Umm… what can I say?

What did your club get right on and off the field?
Everything. There’s no better run club in the Thai league.

And what did they get wrong?
I’d still like to see some fan involvement in the match day experience. Fans are a part of the ‘team’ and often have great ideas on how to improve enjoyment.

Who have been your best players this season?
Peeradon has been outstanding and is very underrated. I hope he stays for another year.

And who hasn't performed?
All those who were shipped out in December.

Which was your favourite away trip?
Only managed one this year due to work. I joined a rather gangster like group of expats on the trip to Korat.

What was the best thing that happened to you whilst supporting your club this season?
Not the best, but this year we saw three great players leave our league. Great servants of the game and all 3 I’ve had the pleasure of seeing in a Buriram United shirt; David Rochela, Andres Tunes and, the best ever, Diogo Luis Santo.

What are your impressions of the league overall this year?
Not wanting to repeat last year’s comments, all looked good heading into mid season. A potentially tight title race didn’t evolve but great to see Bangkok United getting closer to the champions. Sad to see Korat going down as it’s a top road trip. Most disappointing also to see Chonburi failing to secure 7th spot.

Which T1 team most impressed you?
I think Bangkok United are heading in the right direction, as are Port. Any team that can come into my house and trash it deserves respect.

What has really annoyed you about Thai football this season and why?
The lack of coverage on tv. You’re never going to entice fans back without putting the product on tv.

Finally, what message would you like to give to your fellow Buriram Utd fans and fans of Thai football.
Keep the faith. Keep supporting your local team and keep going to the games. All the teams need our support.
