New! Post Match Interview With A Sukhothai Fan: 2022

Sukhothai fan, Bill Greaves, shares his thoughts on last Saturday's match.

What are your impressions of Chonburi Stadium?
Chonburi Stadium is about the same size as Talay Luang, perhaps a little bigger. My wife was very pleased with the cleanliness of the ladies bathroom. I am a lot less agile than I used to be and I was very happy with the steps and stairways. It should be noted that the absolutely worst spot for away spectators, resides in Lampang. Cheers arose when a spectator achieved a bottom row seat there.

What was the atmosphere like on the day?
Sukhothai have a large group of supporters who live in/near Bangkok. They call themselves Firebat Hardcore and can electrify any atmosphere. They were incredible in the pouring rain for our 0 – 2 defeat at the hands of Muang Tong. Sadly, they were largely absent from the Chonburi game so it was quieter than I had hoped for.

How do you think Chonburi as a club handled a very sensitive occasion today?
It was a tragic and sad situation. I think Chonburi handled it very well with discretion and dignity.

What are your feelings on the first half?
I thought Sukhothai were terrible. The goal was soft and I was preparing to endure another Buriram style 6 goal massacre. However, as we got closer to half time, I started to feel that we might just get away with a one goal defeat. Could we equalize? We couldn’t even get out of our own half.

And the second period?
Again, a one goal loss was on the cards until the red card. Then it was out and out manic defending with a bit of help from the woodwork. By the end of the regular 90 minutes a one goal deficit was going to be a sad but acceptable defeat. The 93rd minute? I’m sorry but my brain has been unable to rationalize that yet. Is that not exactly why we go to football games? My voice is hoarse, my demeanour is hysterical. Sympathy for Chonburi? Wellll, maybe a little.

Which of your players stood out today?
Sukhothai social media is full of  Sarawut Thorarit our goal scorer but Kittipun Saensuk the goalie was superb. I still think that the goal he let in was a bit soft but after that, heroic was a bit of an understatement. Laércio Soldá our big Brazilian defender glued our defence together – again. Towards the end of the game he moved up to try to create some attack. Sukhothai strikers are as rare as Ukrainian electricity so maybe that is a move that Coach Amato is contemplating.

Which Chonburi players impressed you the most today?
Amadou Ouattara, Yoo Byung-soo, Faiq Bolkiah and Channarong Promsrikaew are the players that impressed me. All forwards including the goal scorer. They  were fast tricky and their play was intricate. I can not be critical of any of the Chonburi squad. The goalie - Chommaphat Boonloet - had little to do apart from picking the ball out of the net and the defenders were much the same.

What is your opinion of the final result?
What a terrible question to ask me. The final result was a fair result of the game. Sukhothai have no strikers and came down intent on a 0 – 0 draw. A soft early goal ended that dream but we played incredible defence for the rest of the game. Chonburi can claim to have been robbed by a lucky last minute strike. If Sukhothai had lost to a saveable shot early on we would be moaning just as loudly about our indomitable defending being all for naught.

How does Saturday's result and performance compare with your other matches this season?
We let in 9 goals in the first 2 games. Then Laércio Soldá appeared on the scene and we have let in 8 in the 9 games since. Last year we had the most goals in the second division; this year we have become a defensive juggernaught. We came south planning on a scoreless draw. We were not flawless but we got the result we were looking for.

What are your expectations for the rest of the season?
Are we part of the relegation struggle or a mid-table team? I will answer that when the season is over. We have a good coach and if we remain in the relegation battle, we will be top of the heap. If we get a striker we could be comfortably mid-table.

And for Chonburi?
Chonburi are third in the league and I suspect that they are over performing. We were beaten by Port last week and we deserved what we got. They were the better team. We drew with Chiang Rai and lost to Muang Tong away. I believe that we can win our return matches, same as Chonburi.

Do you have any amusing or interesting stories from your trip today?
After the psychological terror and horror that I endured at Chonburi Stadium do you really think I am prepared to be amusing? Seriously, I used to teach in Bangkok and my memory of  Bang Saen is of a Grade 3 student who came here for school break. He returned 2 weeks late doing a fairly decent imitation of an Egyptian mummy, coated in bandages from his struggles with jellyfish. Chonburi and amusement do not mix.

New! Pre Match Interview With The Blogger (Ratchaburi): 2022

Ratchaburi fan, Neal Oliver sent me a few questions ahead of Sunday's match. Here are my replies

1. What is your expected result from Sunday’s match, and why?
It will be interesting to see how we respond to last weekend's defeat. The way we approach this match, and the result, could define how the rest of our season will play out. We do have a terrible record at Ratchaburi so I'd take a draw, if offered one now. Therefore, I'm going to go for a 1-1 - but hope for an away win.

2. It is my belief that T1 is a league of 2 halves this season.  Teams are either very good or very bad – there seems to be very little middle ground.  It is my belief that Ratchaburi have had a fairly easy run in the league so far this season (I must be Ratchaburi’s biggest pessimist), and still have a few Big Boys to play.  I’ve looked at Chonburi’s games, and you seem to have had a similar easy run.  Do you believe Chonburi will continue their impressive start to the season to the end of Leg 1? Be realistic, where do you think Chonburi will be at the end of the season?
I'm not so sure that I agree with you about us having an easy run. We've aleady played Buriram Utd, BG, Muang Thong Utd and Bangkok Utd, which are probably four of the toughest fixtures in any season. We emerged from those games with six points and possibly should have had more; we had a mad fifteen minutes against Buriam Utd - when we conceded three goals - and should really have got something from our meeting with Bangkok Utd. In our other matches, we have performed well and been worthy winners. I believe this year's squad is the strongest we've had in a long time and, provided everyone can stay fit, and we strengthen during the transfer window, there's no reason why we can't finish in the top four or five. Obviously, I'd like to think we are genuine title contenders. Time will tell.

3. Ratchaburi have made quite a few substantial squad changes this season, and actually have T1’s largest foreigner contingent.  Who is the Ratchaburi player you fear most, and why?
I'm not too sure about the players, but I'll really start panicking if I see your chairman Fluke unscrewing the cap from a bottle of water!

4. Ratchaburi have a fantastic defence this season.  Do you think Chonburi’s attack will be able to get past them?  If they do, do you have anybody good enough to beat the brilliant Kampon?
The TPL's leading scorer, Danilo has been impressive this season and ably supported by Amadou and Yoo Byungsoo. On their day any (or all) of these three can be a handful for any defence. Let's hope that Sunday is "their day".

5. We’re 9 games into the season now.  We have all had time to see 9 of the opposition first hand, and will surely have some idea of the League’s abilities.  Do you have a feel for who will win the league, and which teams will depart this season?
Buriram Utd have always got to be considered as favourites, with BG and my outsiders, Bangkok Utd also in the mix. As for the other end, the current bottom three - Khon Kan Utd, Nongbua Pitchaya and Lamphun Warrior - appear to be struggling already and have a lot of work to do if they want to remain in this division.

6. A successful team should strengthen during the mid-season break.  Which positions do Chonburi need to recruit to?  Do you have a wish list?
We need a goalkeeper. One who is imposing and can command the defence. I really believe that this has been a big problem of ours for a number of years. We haven't had a solid custodian since Sinthaweechai was here in his heyday. It is a priority.

7. Who are the Chonburi players we need to watch, and fear?
I've already mentioned our three main strikers, but we do have stregth throughout the squad. Kritsada and Channarong have been making waves this year and are attracting a lot of attention from elsewhere so they are definitely players to watch and fear. But, in all honesty, the threat could come from anywhere. Which is a nice thing to be able to say.

8. When we visited Chonburi Municipality Stadium last season, we enjoyed the little park outside the stadium, which was perfect for a pre-match picnic, but had several odd ball queries i.e.:

Parking.  We used street parking outside the stadium, but I half expected to get back to my car to find it clamped or towed away.  Do you think signposted visiting supporter parking might be a good idea?
There is plenty of street parking nearby, although they do sometimes close the road directly outside the stadium on match days. Due to the location of the ground - it's in a built up area - a designated away car park isn't really a viable option. Another alternative is to park at Central Plaza - about half a mile away - and take a songtaew or taxi to the game. Or, if you're feeling fit, it's quite a pleasant walk.

Tickets.  You have a beautiful box office, which was fully manned.  Why did visiting supporters have to walk the streets in search of a 7-11 to buy tickets?
I'm not really sure why this is. Maybe it's something you could ask the club. If this is the case, it does seem rather silly. I've bought tickets for the main stand from 7-11 before without any problems, but having them available for all fans at the ticket office on match days seems like a logical thing to do.

Accommodation.  As with all Municipality Stadiums, accommodation for visiting supporters is very poor, offering a less than acceptable view of the match.  Does the Chonburi Stadium get so full that a section of covered pitch side accommodation could not be allocated to visiting supporters?  I must say, I was surprised to see so many Chonburi supporters at the opposite end, who must have had just as bad a view of the game as us.
The view from behind both goals isn't the best. But I have seen (and not seen from!) worse. I'm not really sure if offering a section of the main stand or swimming pool stand to visiting supporters would be possible, as many of the home fans in those areas are season ticket holders. This policy of charging away fans more, and often giving them the worst part of the ground, is relatively new in Thai football. It is mainly a result of the boom in 2009. Prior to that, when crowds were nowhere near what they are now, vistors always used to get half of the home club's main stand to sit in. However, it's important to remember that most teams - Chonburi being the notable exception - rarely took a following of more than a dozen or so on their travels in those days. I suppose the main point here is that clubs feel they have a duty to look after their own supporters, as these are the people who will turn up week in, week out.

9. The above long-winded question is all about your stadium.  Do think it would be useful to create a visiting supporter guide for every T1 stadium.  Just basic information, so things like needing to walk the streets in search of a 7-11 to buy a ticket don’t come as a surprise.  There were several Ratchaburi supporters that day who arrived close to kick off, and missed the first 15 minutes of the match because they couldn’t easily buy a ticket.
A few of us have done this in the past, on various independent websites and blogs. However, I agree that it would be great if the league or the clubs themselves produced something official in Thai and English and make it easy to access. As you say, it would be a great help to visiting supporters and casual fans who want to visit a new ground or take in a match.

10. Is there anything Ratchaburi Football Club could do to improve the visiting supporter experience?
I always enjoy my trips to Ratchaburi - in spite of our awful record there - and I think many fans of other clubs agree with me. However, one thing I don't like is being trapped in that cage outside the away stand during half time. It's draconian and totall unnecessary and is at odds with the rest of the pleasurable matchday experience at the ground. It's like one of those exercise pens you see in American prison movies. If they are going to lock us in, at least open a shop in there so we can buy food and drink.

New! Pre Match Interview With The Blogger (Bangkok Utd): 2022

Bangkok Utd fan, Svein sent me some questions ahead of our meeting on Saturday. Here are my replies.

1: Hi, Dale. Are you looking forward to see one of the big boys visiting Chonburi on Saturday?
Very much so. This is a huge match for both clubs. A win for us and a bit of a gap will open up between the top two and everyone else. Plus it will be a big psychological blow in our favour. A defeat for the Shark will dent our confidence and give Bangkok Utd a boost. It should be a cracking game with a fantastic atmosphere.

2: Your team has done well so far this season. How happy are you?
I'm delighted. After all, we are top of the league. During pre season there were a few signs that we looked good going forward, but I was worried about our defence. However, apart from a mad quarter of an hour against Buriram Utd, I can't find fault in anything we've done so far. This is an exciting side to watch and I'm loving every minute of it - apart from the aforementioned fifteen against the team from the north-east! Long may it continue.

3: Do you think Chonburi can stay in the title race until the end of the season?
Ah, the big question. I was going to say that I don't want to be drawn into this debate, as any predications or claims one makes this early in the campaign always come back to bite you on the bum. But, what the heck! Yes. We'll win the league this year!

4: Which Chonburi players have impressed you the most this season?
They all have. There's clearly a strong team (squad) spirit and every one of them has played a part in our fantastic start to the campaign. If I have to single out individuals, Danilo, Suksan (who is sadly injured and out for a few months), Kritsada and Channarong have been outstanding. In fact they've been so impressive that even the Thai football experts have started to take notice.

5:  Are you happy with what former Bangkok United coach Sasom Pobprasert has done in his time at Chonburi?
Yes. Absolutely. It took me a while to warm to him, but results on the pitch this year speak for themselves. He's doing a great job. So much so that there appears to be a growing feeling that he should be appointed as the national team head coach. But why would he want to leave Chonburi now? Also, I'd like to add few words of praise for "general manager" Sasit Singtothong. Someone else who has won me over. He always comes across very well and has certainly improved the club's media output. These two make quite a formidable pair and deserve a lot of credit for what we have achieved.

6: What do you expect from the game against Bangkok United?
I think it will be an entertaining game. There's already a lot riding on the result of this one and I'm sure both teams will want to stake their claim as genuine title contenders. Therefore, I'm expecting a blood and thunder encounter. And, if previous meetings are anything to go by, there will be goals! That said, I'd happily take a scrappy 1-0 win.

7: Any Bangkok United-players you worry can ruin your day?
There is undoubted quality throughout the team so, if they are on form, any of the Bangkok Utd players can ruin our day. I only hope they are overawed by the big occasion and freeze. It's a long shot, but I'm keeping my fingers crossed.

8: What`s your stadium`s capacity, and will this get close to a full house?
The official capacity is 8,680. As much as I'd like to see it full on Saturday, I think it will fall a fair way short. Traditionally, Bangkok Utd don't bring many fans to this fixture so it will be up to the locals to turn up in their numbers. Therefore, anything above 5,000 will be considered a good crowd. I can only hope that if we can maintain our good performances, the attendances will rise accordingly. This team should be playing in front of a packed stadium every home game.

9: Do you have any good or bad memories from previous games between the two teams?
Plenty of both!
Bad: The 7-2 thrashing at Thammasat and 1-5 reverse at home in the 2017 season are particularly painful memories.
Good: The 5-1 win in our first ever meeting and, of course, last season's League Cup quarter final victory. The latter came at a time when we needed a good result.

10: Anything you'd like to add?
I really wish I could be there on Saturday (and every other weekend!). But I will be receiving regular live updates from my mate, Tim. It's like having my own personal radio station reporter at the ground. They're always informative and laced with liberal dashings of humour. He's even started to include star guests. I really wish everyone could hear his reports. They are that good!

New! The Season So Far (2): 2022

Here's Tim Spear with his thoughts on the start of our campaign

What are your overall thoughts on the season so far?
Overall it's been an outstanding start to the season. I really didn't think it would be this successful.

Which players have stood out?
Alves has been awesome. His link up play is exceptional and he's clearly enjoying himself. Also, the youngster Channarong has been a revelation.

What has been the highlight?
There have been so many great goals and performances, but the attacking play and interchange up front have been particularly impressive. Every player tries to receive the ball and the movement upfield is awesome.

And the low point?
Dropping points against Buriram Utd. But they will win the league so it wasn't entirely unexpected.

What are your hopes from here?
To carry on enjoying watching the games home and away. Hopefully, there will be a lot more entertainment. Unfortunately, we won't be up there at the end of the season, but I'm determined to enjoy it while it lasts.

New! The Season So Far: 2022

Kevin Aamlid shares his thoughts on our exciting start to the season.

What are your overall thoughts on the season so far?
The season so far has been great. We actually look competitive this year.

Which players have stood out?
Suksan for me has been the most impressive. A right back who is great defending and attacking. Really sad about his injury and I hope he can recover as soon as possible. Danilo of course is another player that deserves praise. I think he looks better now than he did with his previous club (Suphanburi). Amadou has also stood out. He's fantastic on the bll and cuts inside from the wing very well. Channarong too has looked great. I hope BG and Buriram Utd don't plan on taking him away!

What has been the highlight?
Beating Muang Thong Utd 5-1 away is definitely the highlight so far. Easily the best away game I've ever been to. Winning against BG was also pleasing. It's nice to see that even though they have taken one of our best players in recent times (Worachit),  they still can't get the job done.

And the low point?
Our one loss, against Buriram Utd. Awful beginning to the match. Songchai really messed up there. I hope he can find his confidence again and come back stronger. He managed to get an assist in the last game.

What are your hopes from here?
I hope we can avoid further injuries to key players. Also hope we can continue our great frm and win the league. It's going to be tough, but we have shown tht we have what it takes. In addition, I don't want us to sell any of our key player. This didn't work out well for us last season. I hope that the board know that if we keep our best players and get good results, fans will come to matches.
