New! They Think It's Mariover...It Isn't Yet by Gian Chansrichawala: 2023

Here's Gian Chansrichawala with his take on the strange goings on over at Muang Thong Utd this week:

I really have no idea what to make of the current situation at my club Muangthong United. Take these words with a grain of salt, as my mind could be completely changed tomorrow by new developments.

I strongly believe in Mario Gjurovski’s coaching and style of play, and his man-management for the most part has been impressive. Admittedly he has been learning on the job, but that's to be expected for a young coach and can also be seen as part of the fun. Coming fourth last season with this team is a huge accomplishment.

However, I think he realised that the writing was on the wall after that Buriram draw. Losing two points after being 4-1 up with just over 20 minutes left to play is reflective of a mentality issue within the side.

I made peace with his departure after his social media post, where he clearly said “it’s time to say goodbye.” My thinking was: Mario is an excellent coach, and I do genuinely want him to return to Muangthong one day with more experience under his belt.

I get the sense that this sudden u-turn is at the behest of the club, who don’t want to go through the process of finding a new manager to continue the project… though that’s just speculation. Frankly, it’s confusing and potentially disrespectful to the amazing legacy he has here as a player and coach. The club needs to make a decision and stick to it because our morale can’t afford a messy breakup with one of our greatest club legends.

Whoever is in the dugout for the game on Sunday, I just hope we can witness a good match. Massive props to Chonburi for what they’ve done this season, getting good results and competing at the right end of the table while bringing through young players too. Sasom was given time to ride out some horrible form and now here he is, leading the club to an excellent season. Make of that what you will.
