Chonburi's young midfielder, Channarong Promsikaew, recently joined Spanish club, Unión Adarve, on loan. I caught up with their commercial manager, who was kind enough to answer some questions about the move.
Please can you start by telling us about your club
Union Adarve is a special club. We represent the forth team in Madrid (as a city, just behind Real Madrid, Atletico and Rayo Vallecano) and we do it with an idea of city football. We have been competing for almost thirty years (2022 will bring us our 30th anniversary) with very clear values: effort, intensity and never giving up. These values allow us to compete with teams with very high budgets in U19 and below like Real Madrid, Atletico de Madrid, Rayo Vallecano, Getafe, Leganes, Real Valladolid, etc. We are different, and we like to be called "The Wolves”: once you are in, we will not leave you behind.
What kind of season did you have last year?
It was a difficult season due to the pandemic. But we got the best of ourselves, the arrival of Victor Salamanca (Harvard alumni) as new President helped us and we managed to relaunch the club and get promotion. But not only the first team did great, as our academy performed astonishingly with U18 & U17 leading their tables hitting promotion and U19 making to the Top4.
What are your hopes for the new season?
Further improvement. Make a more competitive and professional youth academy, developing facilities, and continue growing with our first team.
What are your long term hopes for the club?
The goal of the new management team is to make a top of mind academy in Spain with great facilities that can help develop talent from Spain and from abroad, allowing a solid financial performance that will contribute to make a strong first team, competing in higher divisions, when possible.
Which is the biggest match your club has played in so far?
We beat Real Madrid Castilla with Reguilón and we promoted against Málaga B, with En Nesiry and Ontiveros. But our biggest match is yet to come. We have great hopes for Copa del Rey this year and we expect to pass several rounds.
How closely do you follow Thai football and Chonburi FC?
We did not know much about the Thai league, but we have discovered that there is talent. From now on we are Chonburi FC fans.
How did you get to hear about Channarong? And how often have you seen him play?
We knew he was trying to make it in Spain and our sports director watched many videos of Channarong with our coach. It was an easy choice, as he is very talented.
What is it about him that most attracted you and what do you think he will he bring to your team?
Our coach has trained many years at Real Madrid academy and believes there are not many talents like Channarong. He's fast, has a lot of stamina and a left foot to make the difference. He is an incredible passer for our forwards.
What are your hopes for him next season?
Time will tell, but he is called to be an important player for the squad. He is already very integrated and is going to shine with his quality. Our international star!!
How do you think he will cope in the Spanish league? If he does, would you like to make the signing a permanent one?
His physical resistance and his personality will make everything easier. He can also play in several positions. We hope he can spend a long time with us.
How do you think he will cope with life in Spain - off the field?
Channarong is a happy lad. And Madrid is a city for happy people. His teammates are delighted with him.
What is the club doing to help him settle?
We have helped him to find home and he can count on us for everything. The coach is with him and his teammates have integrated him quickly.
Do you think you would like to sign more Thai (or Chonburi) players in the future?
If Channarong's experience goes well, we'd be delighted. It looks like that will be a success.
Would you consider sending some of your players over to Chonburi in return?
It would be an interesting experience, especially for the academy so we'd love to further explore such an option. We can grow together. It is something that depends on our coaches, and we are open to improve football and our team.
Is there anything else you'd like to add?
We are glad to be in touch with Thailand and learn a new culture. It has been a pleasure talking with you and we appreciate your interest. Last but not least, remember that any fans from Thailand can sign to be fans of our club and get a discount to watch Channarong, as all our games will be broadcasted.
