New! Steve Darby On Adul Lahso: 2023

Former Thailand national team coach, Steve Darby, shares his views on Adul Lahso and his appointment as Chonburi "caretaker" boss.

What qualities did Adul have as a player?

I thought he was a classic Makalele/Kante type of player. Often going unseen by fans, but not by players and coaches. He had great positional sense and broke up many attacks. He covered the back four brilliantly. He was superb at 2009 SEA games for me and the national team.

What do you think were his weaknesses?
If I had to say, possibly a lack of goalscoring. But in the role he played in midfield that was never going to be his priority

What was he like in the dressing room?
I found him quite quiet. He just went about his job. He was never a problem to a coach. A good pro.

Do you think he has what it takes to become a good coach?
If you had asked me when he was playing, I would have said no. He had the football intelligence, but was very quiet, almost shy. I had a similar player at Home Utd in Singapore, who never spoke in three years, but has now won leagues in Singapore and Malaysia as a coach. So it is very difficult to predict.

It's only a temporary appointment, but what do you think about the timing of it? And what can he hope to achieve in such a short space of time?
Welcome to Asian football! All you can do is win! Long term is next week and development is winning by a bigger score. Winning is political power for a coach in Asia.

What advice would you give him?
Be yourself! Use your football intelligence and coach the person not the player. And don't listen to the fans or the committee! Good luck, Adul. We all need luck in this game.
