Post Match Quotes
Masahiro Wada: Chonburi FC
"The first 10 minutes were decisive to the result of the game, and it was hard for us to control the situation after conceding three goals. I take full responsibility for this defeat but Beijing Guoan were much better than us. They were different class.

However, we will learn from the mistakes we made in this match and make the necessary adjustments to help us improve. I would like to apologise to all the Chonburi fans for not taking us through to the group stages of the AFC Champions League.

Though we’re now out of the AFC Champions League, we will still work hard and hope to have a good season in the domestic league."

Xie Feng: Beijing Guoan
“I have to say thanks to our supporters and the fighting spirit of my players today. Before the match there was not too much pressure from the club, but at last we won.

We asked for a good opening, with special attention to both flanks and to try to get in behind their defence. Our players executed these requirements firmly, that was why we could mostly lock down the win within the first 20 minutes.”

"Well, Brian, after the horrors of the opening twenty minutes, I feared the worst. It was men against boys out there. Thankfully, we managed to steady the ship and salvage some pride. I was disappointed to concede the late goal, as I felt we deserved to draw the second half.

Thiago's sending off was a joke. He's clearly just stood on the lad by accident. The ref's got that one wrong, in my book. He could easily have sent off two of their lads earlier on but obviously bottled it in front of the home fans. I don't want to say too much more for fear of getting myself in trouble. It's just a shame you never get the refs coming out after a game to discuss their decisions.

I'm sure the lads are as gutted as I am by the result but we need to pick ourselves up now and concentrate on next week's opening day TPL fixture against Police Utd. They showed some great character out there last night and I'm hoping we'll get the same 110% from them on Saturday."

Beijing Guoan advanced into the AFC Champions League group stage for a sixth appearance in seven seasons after a convincing 4-0 victory over Thai side Chonburi in the final round of the play-offs at Beijing Workers’ Stadium on Saturday.

The club from the Chinese capital eased past their Southeast Asian visitors with an impressive display of clinical finishing that saw them notch three goals inside the first twenty minutes.
Joffre Guerron scored in the first minute and needed just nine minutes to double his and Beijing’s tally with a sublime second from distance.

Nigerian striker Peter Utaka then netted a third on 18 minutes as Beijing took command of a game that they controlled comfortably, with second half substitute Shao Jiayi scoring a fourth a minute before the final whistle.

Chonburi forward Thiago Cunha was dismissed in stoppage time to compound a difficult night for the Thai Premier League team.

Beijing will now meet J.League champions Sanfrecce Hiroshima, 2013 AFC Champions League runners-up FC Seoul and Australian side Central Coast Mariners in Group F of the continental competition.

Kicking off the match in temperatures of just 3 degrees, Beijing caught their Thai opponents cold, and opened the scoring in the very first attack of the match through South American forward Guerron.

The 28-year-old latched on to a long bouncing ball from the back and, after defender Anderson hesitated, steered the ball past Sinthaweechai Hathairattanakool in the Chonburi goal.

A shell-shocked visiting side were still yet to get out of first gear and just 10 minutes later Guerron doubled Beijing’s lead in spectacular fashion.

The Ecuadorian needed just two touches this time as he received the ball outside the penalty area: one with his right to control Zhang Xizhe’s high ball and take it away from Anderson, and then the second, a howitzer with his left, to send the ball screaming over the Chonburi custodian and into the roof of the net.

And Beijing only needed another eight minutes to give the scoreline an almost insurmountable complexion as a cross whipped in from the left by marauding fullback Zhang Xinxin was met by Utaka who beat both marker and goalkeeper at the near post to head home.

Beijing controlled proceedings throughout and Guerron had the ball in the net again on 63 minutes with a header but his hat-trick was denied by the assistant referee’s flag signalling an offside.

In the final minute of the game substitute Shao steered home a pullback from the left flank by Zhang Chengdong to give a scoreline that reflected Beijing’s dominance of the game.

And Chonburi were to finish the fixture with ten men after Brazilian Cunha was dismissed in the final minute of stoppage time for a foul on Zhang Xinxin.
