It's been seven hours and fifty three days
Since you took my football away
I stay in every night and sleep all day
Since you took my football away
Since football's been gone I can do whatever I want
I can watch whatever I choose
I can eat my dinner while playing on the new PS4
But nothing,
I said nothing can take away these blues
'Cause nothing compares
Nothing compares to footballlll
Sorry, SinĂ©ad, you’ve been stuck in my head all day.
And just like that the Thai Government said it was safe for us to play football together.
Monday 1st June 2020. The day football came home.
I packed my football bag 2 days before I needed too, I was that excited. I was also quite relived, because the football group chat was starting to get a bit… political.
It was also the debut of our new kit, which has been sat in my cupboard for weeks. At 4pm, with Hanoi Beer on my chest and The Old English Pub on my back, stood on the astroturf in the shadow of Bearing BTS, with 16 of my closest and personal friends who I have barely kept in touch with for weeks. I could not have been happier.
Three teams of six it was. Obviously, one guy didn’t turn up to completely fuck it up. Still off we went, borrowing a player when it was our turn.
As the sun went down the floodlights came on and lit up the pitch, highlighting the 17 sweaty, sorry excuses for footballers who had bothered to turn up. I checked my watch and we had only been playing an hour... those 8 minute games were about 5 minutes too long when the most exercise I have done for months is a cheeky Barclays in the downstairs toilet while everyone was asleep. Still, we plowed on through the pain. Much like my late night downstairs toilet escapades. I should probably make a doctor appointment now that I think about it.
Generally, we seemed to naturally keep our distance when not playing, and we are not the types to jump all over each other if we do score anyway so it didn’t feel weird to be there.
At full time we just kind of dispersed, no after footy beers at the pitch this time, gotta tow the line.
Quick energy refill like the pros do and then hobble to bed.
Tomorrow is going to hurt, but I am working online so I can crawl to my laptop.
Can’t wait until Saturday to do it all again.
