Friendly/Exhibition Match
Rayong FC & Rayong All Stars 0-4 Chonburi
Pluak Daeng Stadium, Rayong Province
Sunday 5th September, 2010
The entire Chonburi squad (excluding those on international duty) took part in a community event in Pluak Daeng, Rayong earlier this afternoon. All the players and coaches spent two hours coaching local children before participating in a friendly match against two different teams. In the first "half" a virtually full strength side eased its way into a 1-0 lead against Rayong FC, without really getting out of second gear. Wholesale changes were made for the second "half" against Rayong All Stars. The Sharks ended up winning 4-0, with goals from Pipob On-Mo, Nlome Berlin and Jules Baga (2). The whole exercise was great PR for the club and a lot of fun for all involved.
Match Report
A thoroughbly enjoyable way to spend a Sunday afternoon and a great PR exercise for the club. Around 200 local children, aged between 5 and 16, spent two hours being coached in various aspects of the game by the club's coaching staff and the full first team squad (minus Ney Fabiano and those on international duty). It was a joy to see so many youngsters wearing the Chonburi kit and they were obviously loving every minute of having the opportunity to pick up tips from TPL professionals. The club's contingent too were having just as much fun and threw themselves into it with lots of enthusiasm.
The session was followed by a very low key friendly match against two different teams. For the first half, our opponents were Regional League Division two side Rayong FC, who were replaced by Rayong All Stars for the second period. The opening forty five minutes were quite competitive but the visiting players certainly weren't going in for any 50/50 challenges and seemed quite content to let those in red have the ball rather than risk picking up any injuries. However, when we were in possession we passed well and created a few good chances for Pipob and Sukree up front. In fact it was Pipob who struck first when his sweetly hit left foot shot had the keeper flapping in mid air.
As expected, most of the action was in the Rayong half but, on a couple of occasions, Suchin's goal was threatened by long range efforts and an unbelievable miss from only a few yards out. At about the twenty minute mark Therdsak was replaced by Arthit, who is still on the comeback trail after picking up an injury against the Army in the middle of July.
After a Thai cultural show at half time, a virtually new Chonburi eleven took the field against a completely different team, who had thought it wise to turn up in blue shirts. After a short delay while pink bibs were found, the match restarted with the announcement that there'd be another forty minutes of football, unless it got dark first. In the end, it got dark first so the game was prematurely called to a halt. However, by the time the blackness had enveloped the pitch, The Sharks had added three more to the total courtesy of a goal from Nlome Berlin (an incredibly brave diving header that was totally at odds with the rest of the proceedings) and two from Jules Baga.
When the final whistle blew, we finished off our picnics and beers, folded up our mats and strolled on to the pitch to mingle with the players. Dare I say it was just like old times.
