Chonburi 0-1 Bangkok Utd
28th May, 2016
My post match interview with Bangkok Utd head coach, Mano Polking
What was your game plan yesterday?
The game plan was actually very clear. As a coach I believe that when your team is playing well and getting results you just need to leave them free. We analysed Chonburi as usual, but because I could play the same eleven for the third time, I just told the players to continue where they stopped against Sisaket!
Yesterday's match came on the back of that 6-1 win against Sisaket. How did this help you prepare?
It meant we could enjoy the game and play with confidence.
What do you think your team did well yesterday?
The players were always asking for the ball and not staying so high up the field because of the speed from Leandro, Nurul and Kroerkrit.
And where do you think they need to improve?
We still need to improve to kill games when we are leading. We almost always have the chance to score a second or third goal, but we are not being clever enough.
Your team play football the right way - no injury feigning, rely on skill & teamwork etc - what do you say to your players to encourage them to play this way?
I do believe in my philosophy. It means trying to have the ball, building up from the back and we train hard for that, starting with the keepers. A lot of small side games, focusing on possession. And of course I always try to get players that fit into this approach.
There seems to be a strong bond between players and management. What do you do to foster this relationship?
I care a lot about team work. My staff do a lot together off the field and are real friends. It helps a lot. With the players, I try to always be straight and fair. If you work hard you will get the chance to play. After that it’s up to the players.
Which Chonburi players impressed you yesterday?
I like many players from Chonburi. Dos Santos is one of the best defenders in this league and I would always play Leandro on the wing, because he is unbelievably fast! Also the national team players have a lot of quality. It's a team that should be competing for the championship every year in my opinion. Of course you lost three key players that are being missed a lot this season: Thiago, Sintaweehai and Adul. It's difficult to replace them.
Therdsak is under a bit of pressure at the moment. What advice would you give him?
Therdsak is a young coach and knows the club very well. He will manage the pressure!
Even though I'm disappointed with the result, it was an enjoyable match to watch. Do you believe teams should try to entertain the fans?
The first half of the game yesterday was the best I have seen this season, from both teams. High intensity and quality action. Football is always about results, but of course if you can get results with attractive and offensive football, you should go for it.
So, to the big question: Do you think you can win the league?
We will fight till the end. Every game. But it’s far too early to talk about the title. And being really honest, if you see what Muangthong are doing this season they must be champions! Eight regular first eleven national team players plus three good foreigners!
Is there anything else you'd like to add?
Thanks for your support and good luck for the rest of the season
