A blood and thunder encounter played in very difficult muddy conditions, after a rainstorm which had threatened a postponement. With both sides needing a win for very different reasons, this was always going to be an open game. And so it proved. For the first half the two teams traded punches, with Chonburi just about shading it in terms of possession and chances created. In fact they could have considered themselves very unlucky to have gone in at the break on level terms.
The second period was slightly different as our opponents tried to slow the game down and break up The Sharks’ momentum, with the old tried and tested time wasting tactics. As in the first forty five minutes, the home side took the lead only to be pegged back by a dogged Chula Utd.
When the visitors were reduced to ten men for the last twenty five minutes it looked like Chonburi would go on to win the game. And, had it not been for a linesman’s flag, they would have secured all three points – at the time it didn’t look like the right decision and my suspicions were confirmed later after seeing the incident again on video.
When the final whistle blew there was a mixture of disappointment, disbelief and anger from the locals. Sadly, the latter emotion spilled over into the car park and I fear that the club will face some sort of punishment for the actions of a couple of people. But, when the dust finally settled, the spoils were shared, which, in all honesty, was no good to either team. Chonburi look destined to finish second and Chula are all but down.
