NEW!! Thoughts On The "New Normal Demonstration Match" by Tim Spear: 2020

Chonburi fan, Tim Spear went to the "New Normal" Demonstration Match between Rayong and Chonburi. Here is the account of his experiences at the stadium.

When did you decide to go to the match?
I decided to go as soon as I saw the story on the Chonburi FC website. There wasn't any information at all until Friday.

How did you purchase your ticket?
I went on the Rayong FC Facebook page and found a link for Thaiticketmaster. However, there was no information on their site so I emailed them, and received a link about an hour later. I had to sign up to order a ticket online. Unfortunately I could only order one, and by the time Clare (my wife) returned home, all areas had sold out. Luckily, the ticket was free.

What happened when you arrived at the ground?
On arrival, I just wandered about. I got through one barrier into the VIP section, and saw the Sharks arrive, without any intervention. But when I tried to enter the turnstiles I got escorted around the ground. Here I found the entrance, it was more like an airport. First I had to show ID, then sign in using QR. Next I had to scan my ticket. After this, the TV scanner then a heat checker. I then needed to have my photo taken holding my ID. All told, this took around 3-4 minutes. I was instructed to wear mask at all times. I guess this is the way it needs to be, but is it worth it for so few fans?

What was the reaction to you as a foreigner?
People have behaved normally towards me. There has been no acknowledgement of me being a foreigner and I haven't been treated differently to anyone else.

What size crowd was at the match?
I'd say 200/300 home fans and 60 or so Chonburi supporters. Obviously, there was a lot of space.

How did the crowd behave inside the stadium?
The crowd was very passive. Mainly small family groups, mostly women with kids and the occasional male alone. No instruments or singing which is extremely weird. And no alcohol, of course.

How do you think Rayong FC handled the "New Normal" restrictions?
They handled it very well. All without fuss and Thai style. They weren't over officious and appeared organised without being regimented. They did a good job.

If this became the procedure at all TPL matches, would it put you off going?
It is live football! Over the years, I have seen the good, bad, ugly and wonderful of Thai footy. Hopefully nothing will stop this season continuing now and I will certainly keep going.
