The ongoing Wuachon United saga has finally been settled. The club, which was promoted as Buriram FC last season, had hoped to relocate to the southern city of Songkhla, after being sold by former owner Newin Chidchob, in spite of protests from other TPL clubs and fans. However, it was announced at the press conference following today’s 2-1 away win against Esarn United, that the Fighting Bulls will be moving to Chonburi instead.
Acting chairman Maptaput Muangrak told reporters, “The whole mess has dragged on far too long and nobody seemed able to make a decision so we took it upon ourselves to come up with a solution. A lot of our current squad and coaching staff came from Chonburi and still live in the city so it makes perfect sense for us to play our home games there. Also, Chonburi is about halfway between Buriram and Songkhla so any fans who want to travel from those cities to watch us, won’t have as far to go. We have spoken with the TPL and they have agreed to switch our fixtures so that our first match at the Chonburi Stadium will be against our new local rivals Chonburi next Saturday. It will be a special occasion.”
He went on to add that the club will be opening a new superstore in the city’s Central Plaza and a restaurant – The Bull’s Cafe – near to the ground.
Muangrak closed by saying,”In three years we will have overtaken the Sharks as the province’s top club and will be emulating Buriram United by competing against the best in the AFC Champions League.”
There have been mixed reactions from local fans.
Chonburi fan club member Chui told me, “There’s only room for one club in this city. And that’s Chonburi!”
But another supporter, Tangmo, said,”This is great news! Jadet, Puritat, Arthit, Ney Fabiano and the others are all coming home. I will certainly start supporting Wuachon United. All the way to the AFC Champions League.”
Wuachon United v Chonburi will be played at the Chonburi Stadium on Saturday 7th April. Kick off is scheduled for 7:45pm.
