Season Review: 2016

The 2016 season ended abruptly when Thailand's much loved monarch, King Bhumibol Adulyadej, sadly passed away on October 13th. Here is my review of that truncated campaign.

What are your overall impressions of our season?
I was very disappointed with our performances in the first half of the season - in fact, right up to, and including, the Muang Thong Utd home game. However, after this, we started to look like a team again. Obviously there were very sad circumstances surrounding the early finish of the season, but I honestly believe we would have gone on to win the FA Cup. Which would have been just rewards for our second leg run.

What did Therdsak get right?
He gave a few of the youngsters a chance and brought Prince into the team. He also brought Adul back on loan - which was a masterstroke.

And what did he get wrong?
He didn’t get involved enough. At times - especially during the early part of the year - he looked as if he didn’t even want to be there.

What advice would you give him ahead of next season?
Tell the senior management that you’re in charge of the team, you’ll pick the players on merit, you’ll call the shots on signings and, if they don’t like it, you’ll walk.

Who have been our best players this season?
Anderson dos Santos was our standout player for the first leg, but Adul was exceptional after his return. It’s no coincidence that our form picked up when he came on loan. I’d also like to mention Kim Jong Pil - who grew in maturity as the season progressed - and Prince Amponsah - not the finished article, but he certainly gave us something to cheer, and was exciting to watch.

And who hasn't performed?
There are plenty of players currently at the club who are stealing a living. They’re just not good enough and show no signs of improving.

Which players would you keep?
I would’ve done anything in my powers to have kept Adul, Leandro, Jong Pil and dos Santos. Other than that, Prince and prakit would be top of my list.

And who would you let go?
Kroerkrit. If clubs are willing to pay B10million for him, bite their hands off! Have these people been watching him this season? He has to be the most overrated footballer ever! Sell. Sell. Sell!

Which players, or type of players, would you like to sign?
A commanding goalkeeper. Apparently Hassan Sunny is looking to get away from Army Utd. He has his faults, but realistically he’s the best we can do.

Two full backs.

Someone to replace Adul, dos Santos, Kim Jong Pil and Leandro. Good luck with that!

A twenty a season goalscorer. I’m sure Thiago Cunha would jump at the chance of returning.

Which was our best performance this season?
Bangkok Utd away. We took the game to the title contenders and completely outplayed them. We were very unlucky not to bring home all three points that day. And it’s always satisfying to beat Muang Thong Utd, so I have to mention the (ultimately pointless) FA Cup quarter final win at Rajamangala.

And our worst?
The defeat in Tokyo was embarrassing on so many levels. Outclassed, outplayed, outfought, out of our depth.

Which was your favourite away trip?
Sukhothai. Me and the wife took the opportunity to spend a few days away in a city I’ve long wanted to visit. We also won - in farcical conditions - and the atmosphere on the terraces in the pouring rain was something special.

What was the funniest thing that happened to you this season?
Using our car cover to try and shelter about fifty Chonburi fans from the aforementioned rain at Sukhothai. It didn’t work!

Which song sums up Chonburi's season?
Anything by the Shaggs. Everybody playing their part earnestly, but not producing anything remotely cohesive or tuneful. However, it somehow still manages to be appealing and charming.

Which PLT team most impressed you and why?
Bangkok Utd. They played some entertaining stuff on the field and seem to have things sorted off it. It’s a real shame that they had to leave the Thai-Japanese just as they started becoming serious title contenders. I’m sure their crowds would have been much better if they’d stayed. They also have a cracking coach in Mano Polking.

Which visiting fans most impressed you this season?
Sukhothai and Sisaket. Both travelled in numbers (mostly from Bangkok and Laem Chabang in Sisaket’s case) and helped create a fantastic atmosphere. Good natured too.

What are your impressions of the league overall this year?
Very poor. The fact that the top two were so far ahead speaks volumes. The end was beyond farcical too. Which just about summed up the 2016 season.

What advice would you give the club management ahead of next season?
Listen to the fans. The once special bond we had has now been eroded and this is a huge shame. There are lots of us out here who want to help the club back on track. Gates are dropping rapidly and you really need to do something to win back the stayaway supporters. And attract new ones.

What message would you like to give to our fellow Chonburi fans?
Stop all that post match serenading nonsense and expecting the team to do a “lap of honour” after every game. Let them know how you feel. If they haven’t performed - tell ‘em! Also, please can we go back to doing something original? All we seem to do these days is copy what other fans are doing and it’s embarrassing.

Anything else you'd like to add?
I really hope someone has got some decent signings lined up. We’ve just let our four best players leave - with no outward signs of replacements - and I really fear the worst next season (especially if we’re relying on Kroerkrit!), unless something is done.
